Chapter 42: Prepositions (2) – Προθέσεις (2)<br />

Prepositions are small words, particles, which aid us to show location, direction, means etc. In English examples of prepositions are such as<br />

in, out, with, without, against etc. In Cypriot there is a great number of prepositions which take specific cases. They are not inflected<br />

according to gender and number because they take cases and thus their use is straightforward if you know what case they take and the<br />

personal pronouns of each case.<br />

42.1 Πούποτε = Nowhere/Anywhere<br />

It is a directional-locational preposition which means it is used to indicate a location or a direction and therefore it takes no case.<br />

Εν έσ’ει ψουμίν πούποτε.<br />

There is no bread anywhere.<br />

Εν πάει πούποτε.<br />

He is going nowhere.<br />

42.2 Όποθθεν/όποττεν = Whereever/From whereever/From whichever direction<br />

Directional-locational preposition so no case.<br />

Οποθθεν/Οποττεν τζ’αι να πάει έθεννα φτάσει.<br />

From wherever/from whichever direction he will go he will not reach his destination.<br />

Μπόρει να πάει όποθθεν/όποττεν θέλει.<br />

He can go whereever he wants.<br />

42.3 Δαχαμαί, Δαμαί, Ώδε = Here<br />

Directional-locational preposition. No case.<br />

Έλα δαμαί/δαχαμαί/ώδε.<br />

Come here.<br />

Φερ το δαμαί/δαχαμαί/ώδε.<br />

Bring it here.<br />

Κάτι έσ’ει δαμαί.<br />

There’s something here.<br />

42.4 Δά, Δάθθε, Δάττε, Δάττε μέρου = Towards this direction here<br />

Directional-locational preposition. No case.<br />

Έλα δά/δάθθε/δάττε/δάττε μέρου.<br />

Come towards this direction here.<br />

Φερ το δά/δάθθε/δάττε/δάττε μέρου.<br />

Bring it towards this direction here.<br />

42.5 Ποδά, Ποά, Ποδάθθε, Ποδάττε, Ποάττε = Over here (from over there)<br />

Directional-locational preposition. No case.<br />

Έλα ποδά/ποά/ποδάθθε/ποδάττε/ποάττε<br />

Come over here.<br />

Φερ το ποδά/ποά/ποδάθθε/ποδάττε/ποάττε<br />

Bring it over here.<br />

42.6 Τζ’ειχαμαί, Τζ’αχαμαί, Τζ’αμαί, Τζ’ικάτω = (Over) Τhere<br />

Directional-locational preposition. No case.<br />

Πήαιννε τζ’ειχαμαί, τζ’αχαμαί, τζ’αμαί, τζ’ικάτω.<br />

Go (over) there.<br />

Βούρα τζ’ειχαμαί, τζ’αχαμαί, τζ’αμαί, τζ’ικάτω.<br />

Run (over) there.<br />

Κάτι έσ’ει τζ’ειχαμαί, τζ’αχαμαί, τζ’αμαί, τζ’ικάτω.<br />

There is something (over) there.<br />

42.7 Τζ’ει, Τζ’είθε, Τζ’είττε, Τζ’είττε μέρου = Towards that direction there<br />
