16.1.6 –ίσκω
The verbs ending in –ίσκω are in fact mostly verbs which originate from adjectives ending in –ος and –υς thus this verbial suffix makes
adjectives into verbs and their meaning can easily be guessed. Some also originate from Italian verbs ending in –are or -ire which is one of
the languages which has influenced Cypriot considerably. Note though that the suffix –ίσκω is ancient Greek in origin.
Μακρύς -> Μακρυνίσκω
Όμορφος -> Ομορφυνίσκω
The formation is somewhat straightforward. If the adjective ends in any adjective ending you drop it and add –υνίσκω or –ανίσκω
depending on the consonant after you drop the adjectival ending. If the adjective ends with –νυς, –νος κτλ in which case you simply add –
ίσκω.
