Editor’s Notes
About one year ago I took the job of editor for the 2007 National Convention Guidebook,
with Tom Rea overseeing layout, graphic design, and publishing. It has been a very interesting
year. After sending and receiving hundreds of e-mails, sorting and choosing from more than 2,000
submitted cave photos, sorting or creating over 900 guidebook files, making scores and scores of
phone calls, scanning several dozen historical items, and editing (and sometimes begging for)
more than 20 original articles, the task is now complete.
This guidebook has been a very ambitious undertaking, as it has done things no other NSS
convention guidebook has done before. This guidebook is the first ever to offer a color photography
section, something that was always too expensive to do. But with the generosity of Richard Blenz,
the dream became a reality. This may also be the largest guidebook ever, but we went to great
pains to strive for quality as much as quantity. With that said, we have strived for accuracy and I
hope there are few errors.
I am a photographer so naturally this guidebook is very photo-oriented. It is exciting to note
that many of the photos shown in this guidebook record the original human exploration of the
cave shown in the photo. This is the first time most of these photos have ever been published, and
I am honored to be involved. I want to thank all of the photographers who submitted photos
for publication, particularly David Black, who helped me extensively by allowing me access to his
personal photography collection
And lastly I’d like to thank my wife Janie and my son Christian. Without their support I
wouldn’t have been able to attempt this endeavor.
I hope you enjoy Crawford County and the 2007 NSS National Convention.
