2007 NSS Convention Guidebook of land. The courthouse remained in Fredonia until 1843 when it was moved to Leavenworth. The courthouse remained at Leavenworth until 1896 when it was moved to English. Marengo was established in 1835 after being called Big Springs, Tuckerville, and Proctorville. Marengo did not grow to any degree until after the completion of the Air Line Railroad. Hartford was started in 1838 and did not prosper until the Air Line Railroad was built 18 From the Richard Estridge collection. in 1882. The name Hartford was changed to English after W.H. English of Indianapolis. The railroad had a great impact on Crawford County’s industry. Soon Eckerty and Taswell had over 20 timbering firms. Merchants could order their supplies and have them delivered to the depot, whereas previous shipping went long distances by horse or wagon. The railroad changed life greatly for those in Crawford County and pushed them even closer to the Twentieth Century.
