Geology Field Trip
Figure 13. Stop 1 at the NSS Campground and Pilot Knob are located on top of the Crawford Upland.
heavily-karsted Mitchell Plain. Classic karst
features are associated with subsurface drainage
of the sinkhole plain and the uplands under the
control of massive regional down cutting of the
base level Blue River and Ohio River.
Travel to Stop 2
We will go south on State Road 66 about
12 miles to Tower Quarry and travel past
Pilot Knob. Driving past Pilot Knob, we will
come to the intersection of State Road 66 and
Interstate 64 at the cross roads called Carefree
after about 10 miles. We will turn east onto
Tower Road and proceed about 2 miles
to Tower Quarry owned by Mulzer Stone
Company.
