Stop 1 The Crawford County Fairgrounds is on top of the Crawford Upland, a loess and sandstone-capped, dissected plateau and regional erosional feature with up to 400 feet of relief. Collett (1878) gave the first geologic account of Harrison and Crawford counties, noting many caves and springs. It is a report still useful today because of the quality of the field work. The campground is on top of the regional drainage divide at about 830 feet in elevation, which seems to be the top of a prominent erosional surface sometimes called the Highland Rim or Lexington Peneplain. Loess is a fine-grained wind blown (aeolian) dust that is typically derived from glacial meltwater outwash. Within the Crawford Upland, the limestones exposed in the Mitchell Plain to the east and up dip, are protected by a veneer of westwarddipping interbedded sandstones, limestones, and shales of the lower Chester Group. At and near the campground, these are the Stephensport Group strata. Regional lithologically-controlled erosion with local structural overprints has resulted in the development of a picturesque upland topography. Wyandotte and other large caves are within this area. The eastern edge of the Upland is the Chester Escarpment, a prominent erosional, structural, and topographical transition from the sandstonecapped upland to the carbonate-floored and Figure 12.
