closed and locked behind you. The entrance
is about 200 feet northeast of the gate
directly between the gate and a small pond.
The entrance is situated in a small ravine.
The entrance to Kerns Pit is a steeply
sloped sinkhole with a 3-foot by 8-foot
opening which leads to a 93-foot pit. The
first drop starts in a narrow shaft that
quickly opens up. At the bottom there is a
sloping ledge that overlooks a room with
a ceiling height of 60 feet. From this point
one can also look across the pit and see a
passage continuing on. This passage consists
mostly of crawlways intersecting small pits
and domes. Another 40-foot rappel against
the wall brings one to the bottom of the
room. If tied off close to the pit, a 150-foot
rope is enough for both drops. Rope pads
are desirable for both the main pit and the
second drop.
