2007 NSS Convention Guidebook in length. All are eyeless and unpigmented, which in cave beetles translates to red in color. Over a dozen kinds are known in Indiana, and many are incredibly rare, some remaining undescribed. The most commonly seen are the Wyandotte cave beetle (P. tenuis) in Crawford, Harrison, and southern Washington counties; Marengo cave beetle (P. stricticollis) in northern Crawford and Washington, Orange, and Lawrence counties; and the Shiloh cave beetle (P. shilohensis) in Lawrence, Monroe, and Owen counties. The rove beetles are probably the most common beetles in Indiana caves. The largest, the spelean rove beetle (Quedius spelaeus), is mostly red in color and about half an inch in length. It is widespread in the U.S. where it is usually found on various sorts of animal droppings (common in raccoon latrines). Over a dozen other rove beetle species are commonly found in our caves, although all are inconspicuous in color and small in size, less than a quarter of an inch in length. The rarest animals in this group in the state are the ant beetles. Krekeler’s cave beetle (Batrisodes krekeleri) is known from four caves in Clark, Crawford, and Lawrence counties. An undescribed cave ant beetle is known from one cave in the Hoosier National Forest in Monroe County (Batriasymmodes). Other beetles that are sometimes found in Indiana caves are feather-winged beetles, round fungus beetles, scarab beetles, and carrion beetles. Flies – The first animal a visitor is likely to see in an Indiana cave is a mosquito, hanging on the ceiling near the entrance. Two species are common (Culex pipiens, Anopheles punctipennis). One kind of fly is troglobitic, the cave dung fly (Spelobia tenebrarum). This small black fly is commonly found on animal droppings and comes to cheese bait in almost any cave habitat. A troglophile, the cave humpbacked fly (Megaselia cavernicola) is equally common. The pinkish-brown heleomyzid flies (Aecothea specus, Amoebaleria defessa) are easily seen on cave walls. Other common kinds in Indiana caves are the fungus gnats (so-called 184 glow-worms) and moth flies. Moths – One kind commonly over-winters and is frequently noticed due to its rather bright pink coloration. The herald moth (Scoliopteryx libatrix) is the harbinger of winter in Indiana caves. Snails – Both aquatic and land snails live Herald moth (Scoliopteryx). in Indiana caves. The troglobitic spiral cave snail (Antroselates spiralis) occurs only in cave streams in the Blue <strong>River</strong> basin. Many calciumloving land snails live around the entrances to caves, like attractively banded alternate anguispira (Anguispira alternata), or common three-toothed snail (Triodopsis tridentata) with the three “teeth” in the shell’s opening. The inflected land snail (Inflectarius inflectus) lives deeper in caves and may be a troglophile. Flatworms – One kind occurs in caves across both karst belts, Weingartner’s cave flatworm (Sphalloplana weingartneri). These small worms are free-living (not parasites) and are almost always found on the undersides of stones. In quiet pools they may glide upside down on the surface tension of the water.
