Regarding the Masonic Secession<br />

The National Archives <strong>of</strong> Scotland contains records <strong>of</strong> the Masonic Secession,<br />

including the complaint by Mary’s Chapel Lodge against those supporting Dr.<br />

Mitchell.<br />

Certificate <strong>of</strong> [Illegible] Mary’s Chapel Lodge 25 March 1809<br />

I Robert [Illegible] Depute Clark <strong>of</strong> the Peace for the Shire <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh do<br />

hereby certify That there have been lodged with me a certificate upon oath by<br />

two <strong>of</strong> the Members <strong>of</strong> the mason Lodge called Mary’s Chapel Lodge attested<br />

by John Ballantyne and Thomas Sommers in terms <strong>of</strong> an Act <strong>of</strong> Parliament<br />

pass’d in the year seventeen hundred and ninety nine entitl’d “an Act for the<br />

more effectual suppression <strong>of</strong> Societies established for seditious and treasonable<br />

purposes; and for better preventing treasonable and seditious practices”<br />

Together with their [illegible] <strong>of</strong> said Lodge its usual times and places <strong>of</strong><br />

meeting and a list <strong>of</strong> the attending Members to be recorded in terms <strong>of</strong> the said<br />

Act as witness my [illegible] at Edinburgh this twenty fifth day <strong>of</strong> March<br />

eighteen hundred and nine years.<br />

George by the Grace <strong>of</strong> God <strong>of</strong> the Untied Kingdom <strong>of</strong> Great Britain and Ireland<br />

King and defender <strong>of</strong> the Faith<br />

Messenger at arms our Sheriffs in that part [illegible] specially constituted<br />

Greetings whereas It is humbly meant and shown to us by [Illegible] William<br />

Wilkie Master, David Pitcairn Depute Master, and James Thomason and Joseph<br />

Deas Wardens <strong>of</strong> the Free Mason Lodge called Edinburgh Mary’s Chapel<br />

holding <strong>of</strong> the Grand Lodge <strong>of</strong> Scotland, for ourselves and the whole other<br />

Members <strong>of</strong> said Lodge, That it is a fundamental and fixed principle amongst all<br />

regular Free Mason Lodges in this Country that they shall at no time enter upon<br />

or discuss any political subject regarding either church or <strong>St</strong>ate and this<br />

restriction is now also made apart <strong>of</strong> the law <strong>of</strong> the Kingdom, by an act <strong>of</strong><br />

Parliament passed the Twelfth day <strong>of</strong> July Seventeen hundred and ninety nine<br />

which specially <strong>St</strong>atutes and Declares That from and after that date no Mason<br />

Lodge in Scotland shall be allowed to meet buy on the express condition that<br />

two <strong>of</strong> the Members <strong>of</strong> each Lodge do annually make oath in presence <strong>of</strong> a<br />

Justice <strong>of</strong> Peace that they continue to meet for the purposes <strong>of</strong> Free Masonry<br />

only. Notwithstanding these wise and salutary laws, both <strong>of</strong> the Legislature and<br />

the Grand Lodge <strong>of</strong> Scotland as well as certain instructions given and<br />

obligations come under at admission into the Craft (which cannot be explained).<br />

Doctor John Mitchell Physician in Edinburgh took upon him at the quarterly<br />

communication <strong>of</strong> the Grand Lodge in May Eighteen hundred and seven to<br />

make a motion to address us for our recent attention to the interests <strong>of</strong> our
