late as 1760 “the majority <strong>of</strong> Modern [English] lodges were located in the<br />

capital, while most Ancient [English] lodges at that time were also London<br />

based.” 54 At roughly the same time, only 15 per cent <strong>of</strong> Scottish lodges were<br />

located in Edinburgh and, by 1800, the Edinburgh District represented a meagre<br />

11 per cent <strong>of</strong> all lodges (Table 3.5).<br />

Despite the overall lacklustre showings, by 1750 Edinburgh had the<br />

second highest number <strong>of</strong> lodges, closely following the Western District (Figure<br />

3.2). As the Western District encompassed more territory than any other<br />

District, it is not surprising that throughout the eighteenth century it accounted<br />

for the highest number <strong>of</strong> lodges. Compared to English data for the same<br />

period, however, smaller towns were significantly underrepresented. 55<br />

As Figure 3.2 illustrates, the number <strong>of</strong> lodges for the remaining nine<br />

Districts were similar, with the exception <strong>of</strong> the Highlands which made up 11<br />

per cent <strong>of</strong> the aggregate total. The largest concentrations <strong>of</strong> lodges were<br />
