(Ritual, Ch. xiv.).<br />

We have likewise mixed up our degrees into<br />

thirty-three, some part <strong>of</strong> the first original seven<br />

are now intermixed with so-called Higher Degrees.<br />

<strong>The</strong> original Degrees were seven Lesser and ten<br />

Greater. <strong>The</strong> seven Lesser belonged to and originated<br />

with the Old Stellar Cult. <strong>The</strong> ten Greater<br />

belonged to and took their origin in the Solar Cult.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> our Signs and Symbols date back to<br />

Primary Man, and in tracing his evolution we<br />

find how these have originated and one added to<br />

others, and how some <strong>of</strong> these have been changed<br />

with the different Cults.<br />

If we merely consider the tokens <strong>of</strong> recognition,<br />

the passwords, secret words, and the decorations<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Lodges, according to the degrees into which<br />

modern Masonry is divided, we find that many<br />

<strong>of</strong> them are taken from the V.S.L., and are symbolical<br />

<strong>of</strong> events, real or imaginary, some <strong>of</strong> which<br />

are said to have taken place in those comparatively
