<strong>The</strong> foregoing chapters were written before this<br />

Great War commenced, and it must now be obvious<br />

to all Freemasons how futile were the efforts <strong>of</strong> our<br />

Deputy Grand Master, and the other Brothers, to<br />

cement the bond <strong>of</strong> brotherhood for peace and<br />

good-will with the Germans, at their various inter-<br />

national meetings, although the terminology <strong>of</strong><br />

laudation on each side at the time was most<br />

exaggerated. I drew attention to this in an article<br />

published in <strong>The</strong> Freemason, asking the pertinent<br />

question,<br />

Had they succeeded in their object in<br />

preventing the then threatened war? " as I and<br />

others had done some years ago with the Brethren<br />

<strong>of</strong> the United States <strong>of</strong> America, when the question<br />

between us was " Shall there be war, or no war? "<br />

<strong>The</strong> Brothers decided that there should be no war<br />

then, or ever, between England and the United<br />

States <strong>of</strong> America.<br />

<strong>The</strong> question <strong>of</strong> our overtures <strong>of</strong> peace and good-<br />

will to the Germans has now been answered in the<br />

negative—and the Brethren throughout the world<br />

will question why ;<br />
