<strong>The</strong>se are the Signs and Symbols, or Ideographic<br />

Glyphs (Fig. 86), in the Old Toltec <strong>of</strong> the names<br />

<strong>of</strong> the four Brothers <strong>of</strong> Horus, the Guardians or<br />

Supporters <strong>of</strong> the Four Cardinal Points which have<br />

been brought on from the old Stellar Cult and<br />

used in the Solar by the Mayas, as is proved<br />

by their portrayal in the above Bacab Tableau.<br />

We also see (Plate H) from the plate <strong>of</strong> engraved<br />

Shells from mounds (" Maya and Mexican Manu-<br />

scripts," p. 62, Fig. 10) these four Brothers represented<br />

by four Birds'-heads. In the upper one we<br />

have Paradise or Heaven represented as a Square,<br />

in the Centre <strong>of</strong> which there is an Eight-pointed<br />

Star = Heaven in eight divisions ; also in the centre<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Star is the Ideographic Symbol for Horus<br />

as Amsu, thus showing<br />

that he is the chief <strong>of</strong><br />

the Seven Great Powers, or ruler as the eighth.<br />

<strong>The</strong> four Brothers or Children <strong>of</strong> Horus are<br />

depicted as four Birds'-heads, one supporting each<br />

quarter.<br />

In the centre <strong>of</strong> the lower left we have a circle<br />

with the dot, equal to the Star at the summit <strong>of</strong><br />

the Cone, a Sign and Symbol <strong>of</strong> Horus, God <strong>of</strong> the<br />

North and South, and in the centre <strong>of</strong> the lower<br />

right we have Heaven again as a Square with<br />

the four §§ = God <strong>of</strong> the four Quarters. In<br />

each case we have also the Birds'-heads as supporters<br />

and protectors <strong>of</strong> Heaven.<br />

In the central figure we have Heaven divided
