that they had the Pedestal, which the R.A.M.'s<br />

have, and which in the old Temples was always<br />

situated in the centre. <strong>The</strong>se two different degrees,<br />

as we have made them, were then only one, as<br />

can be seen at the Temples <strong>of</strong> Knossos and those<br />

in Central America.<br />

<strong>The</strong> door <strong>of</strong> the Temple was an equilateral<br />

triangle, and therefore a Symbol <strong>of</strong> Heaven<br />

(Fig- 3 5). <strong>The</strong> Square was a Symbol <strong>of</strong> Earth ;<br />

the whole entrance symbolized passing <strong>of</strong><br />

the Soul from earth to heaven.<br />

<strong>The</strong> two Pillars at the porchway en-<br />

trance <strong>of</strong> every Temple are specially im-<br />

portant in ancient symbolism. Originally<br />

these old Mystery Teachers divided the<br />

heavens into two divisions, North and South,<br />

which was represented by the Pole, or Pillar<br />

<strong>of</strong> Set, in the South—El Shaddai <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Phoenicians ; and the Pole, or Pillar <strong>of</strong> Horus,<br />

in the North, termed the<br />

" Sustainers <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Heavens." Sometimes two Eyes were portrayed<br />

as the two Poles, or, rather, two Pole Stars. <strong>The</strong>se<br />

were the representative symbols <strong>of</strong> the two gods<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Pole Stars, North and South, called also<br />

the Two Judges. <strong>The</strong> Ideographs <strong>of</strong> them were<br />

Two Jackals, and were later called in Egyptian the<br />

two Tatt Pillars, one meaning " In Strength " and<br />

the other " To establish " ; and combined Tattu,<br />

which in Egyptian also means " <strong>The</strong> place <strong>of</strong> estab-
