whatever names or forms, are the same, and their<br />

duties are the same in whatever part <strong>of</strong> the world<br />

found. In their primary form they are " the four<br />

living creatures " with the eyes, which as Egyptian<br />

are Ape-headed, Jackal-headed, Bird-headed, and<br />

Human -headed .<br />

In a secondary phase they were given the human<br />

figure, and both forms <strong>of</strong> the four are repeated in<br />

the Revelation <strong>of</strong> John. According to Revelation,<br />

" the four living creatures " are full <strong>of</strong> eyes round<br />

about and within, and they have no rest day and<br />

night, as they are moving round for ever with<br />

the sphere. Being astronomical figures, the eyes<br />

<strong>of</strong> these were the Stars. In the Ritual, the four<br />

are Eyes symbolically,<br />

or the stars <strong>of</strong> the Four<br />

Quarters.<br />

<strong>The</strong> vignette to Chapter 148 <strong>of</strong> Ritual portrays<br />

them as the four Eyes, or guiding Stars, one to<br />

each Quarter, North, South, East, and West. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

are spoken <strong>of</strong> in the Ritual as the Divine Powers =<br />

his children or brothers as the four supports <strong>of</strong> the<br />

future Kingdom (Ritual, ch. 112) and the Four<br />

Glorious Ones (Ritual, ch. 92).<br />

<strong>The</strong> Egyptians now divided their year into four<br />

Seasons, which would roughly correspond<br />

to our<br />

Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, represented<br />

in one phase by the Symbolic Brothers—one for<br />

each Season.<br />
