<strong>The</strong> Koreans depicted the Sign and Symbol <strong>of</strong><br />

Heaven in a Square, and the Four Cardinal Points<br />

or divisions <strong>of</strong> Heaven in four quarters. Barked<br />

sticks— four sticks <strong>of</strong> equal length —form the<br />

square, and four sticks <strong>of</strong> equal length the centre<br />

arms. From the centre arm, the one representing<br />

the East, they removed all the bark, so that it was<br />

white ; from the one representing the West none<br />

<strong>of</strong> the bark was removed. <strong>The</strong> one representing<br />

the North had all removed but one piece in the<br />

centre, and in the South the bark was removed<br />

from the centre, leaving the bark at the two ends.<br />
