not enter into the obligation (in fact it did not in
Egypt), because at Edfu, and in the 1 7th Nome,
there was no sea, and probably the oldest brothers
did not know much about the sea ; and it could
not refer either to the Mediterranean, because that
has, practically speaking, no ebb and flow of tide ;
and therefore this is a recent substitute for the
old original Egyptian — which, I may add,
extant, and which they have lost.
