The British Council is pleased to offer this new collection of papers on the subject of<br />
blended learn<strong>in</strong>g. Teachers <strong>and</strong> course designers <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>in</strong>clude technologymediated<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> their courses, yet little has been written on the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples to be<br />
applied <strong>in</strong> blend<strong>in</strong>g elements which use technology with more traditional face-to-face<br />
teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the same course. This volume contributes to the creation of those pr<strong>in</strong>ciples<br />
through the exposition <strong>and</strong> discussion of 20 case studies from the world of <strong>English</strong><br />
<strong>Language</strong> Teach<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>English</strong> for Academic <strong>and</strong> Specific Purposes <strong>and</strong> teacher<br />
education as well as ma<strong>in</strong>stream <strong>English</strong> as a Foreign <strong>Language</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g. This work will<br />
be useful for teachers design<strong>in</strong>g courses as well as students on teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
academic courses <strong>in</strong> the areas of education, language teach<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> applied l<strong>in</strong>guistics.<br />
Professor Brian Toml<strong>in</strong>son, co-editor, is the Founder <strong>and</strong> President of MATSDA<br />
(the Materials Development Association). He has worked as a teacher, teacher<br />
tra<strong>in</strong>er, curriculum developer <strong>and</strong> university academic <strong>in</strong> eight countries <strong>and</strong><br />
has published many books <strong>and</strong> articles on methodology <strong>and</strong> materials.<br />
Dr Claire Whittaker, co-editor, is the Head of <strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> Teach<strong>in</strong>g at Bell.<br />
Prior to this she worked overseas with the British Council as a teacher, tra<strong>in</strong>er<br />
<strong>and</strong> project manager <strong>in</strong> Bosnia <strong>and</strong> Herzegov<strong>in</strong>a, Pol<strong>and</strong>, Ukra<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> Uzbekistan.<br />
