Muslim marriages are not yet fully recognised by our law. However, <strong>the</strong><br />

legislature and courts have extended some recognition <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>se marriages.<br />

In this <strong>study</strong> unit you will learn why Muslim marriages are not recognised.<br />

You will also learn about <strong>the</strong> limited legislative and judicial recognition of<br />

Muslim marriages. Finally, you will investigate <strong>the</strong> issue of <strong>the</strong><br />

constitutionality of <strong>the</strong> non-recognition of Muslim marriages.<br />
