Domestic violence is an all too common occurrence in South Africa. To
combat this problem, the Domestic Violence Act 116 of 1998 makes
provision for protection orders with which persons who are in a domestic
relationship can protect themselves from domestic violence.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
After studying the content of this study unit you should be able to
(1) indicate which remedy is created by the Domestic Violence Act 116 of
1998
(2) indicate that the Domestic Violence Act also applies to spouses in
customary and Muslim marriages, and to parties to a cohabitation
