OVERVIEW<br />

Before you can begin <strong>study</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> content of <strong>the</strong> module, Family Law, you<br />

should have some general background knowledge <strong>to</strong> enable you <strong>to</strong><br />

understand <strong>the</strong> content of <strong>the</strong> module better.<br />

We have divided <strong>the</strong> discussion of <strong>the</strong> background knowledge in<strong>to</strong> three<br />

<strong>study</strong> units:<br />

. Study unit 1 explains which sources you have <strong>to</strong> consult <strong>to</strong> find <strong>the</strong> law<br />

and in which sequence you should consult <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

. Study unit 2 gives you a general idea of what family law is, what it<br />

deals with, and how it fits in with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r branches of <strong>the</strong> law.<br />

. Study unit 3 explains how <strong>the</strong> South African family law developed over<br />

<strong>the</strong> years.<br />

You should carefully read all <strong>the</strong> information set out in <strong>study</strong> units 1 <strong>to</strong> 3.<br />

If you do not understand <strong>the</strong> background you may find it difficult <strong>to</strong> grasp<br />

<strong>the</strong> scope and content of this module.<br />
