1. Introduction<br />

1.1 Geography and sociodemography<br />

Located <strong>in</strong> the Carpathian Bas<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> central Europe, <strong>Hungary</strong> covers<br />

an area of 93 000 km 2 , more than half of which consists of lowlands<br />

surrounded by mounta<strong>in</strong> ridges and hills. The Danube River, the Tisza<br />

River and Lake Balaton – the biggest freshwater lake <strong>in</strong> central Europe – are<br />

the country’s ma<strong>in</strong> sources of water (HCSO, 2009a). <strong>Hungary</strong> is bordered to the<br />

north by Slovakia, to the east by Ukra<strong>in</strong>e and Romania, to the south by Serbia<br />

and Croatia, and to the west by Slovenia and Austria (Fig. 1.1).<br />
