The <strong>Health</strong> System <strong>in</strong> <strong>Transition</strong> (HiT) profile on <strong>Hungary</strong> was co produced<br />

by the European Observatory on health <strong>Systems</strong> and Policies and<br />

Semmelweis University, which is a member of the network of National<br />

Lead Institutions that work with the Observatory on country monitor<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The NLI network is made up of national counterparts who are highly<br />

regarded at national and <strong>in</strong>ternational level and have particular strengths <strong>in</strong> the<br />

area of health systems, health services, public health and health management<br />

research. They draw on their own extensive networks <strong>in</strong> the health field and<br />

their track record of successful collaboration with the Observatory to develop<br />

and update the HiT.<br />

Semmelweis University is one of the oldest Universities <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hungary</strong> and<br />

is <strong>in</strong>ternationally recognized as a lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stitution <strong>in</strong> Europe <strong>in</strong> the area<br />

of Medic<strong>in</strong>e and <strong>Health</strong> Sciences. Its <strong>Health</strong> Services Management Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

Centre (HSMTC) was officially founded <strong>in</strong> April 1995 and aims at enhanc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

health services management both <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hungary</strong>, <strong>in</strong> the region and on the<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational level. Its activities span education, consultancy and research as<br />

well as participation <strong>in</strong> many <strong>in</strong>ternational programmes and networks.<br />

This edition was written by Péter Gaál (<strong>Health</strong> Services Management<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Centre, Semmelweis University, Budapest), Szabolcs Szigeti (WHO<br />

Country Office, <strong>Hungary</strong>) and Márton Csere (junior fellow, <strong>Health</strong> Services<br />

Management Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Centre, Semmelweis University, Budapest). It was edited<br />

by Matthew Gask<strong>in</strong>s and Dimitra Panteli of the Observatory’s team at the<br />

Department of <strong>Health</strong> Care Management, Berl<strong>in</strong> University of Technology.<br />

Research Director for the Hungarian HiT was Re<strong>in</strong>hard Busse (Department of<br />

<strong>Health</strong> Care Management, Berl<strong>in</strong> University of Technology).<br />
