Future Tense<<strong>br</strong> />

There is no real future tense in Japanese; instead the present<<strong>br</strong> />

tense is used to express the future:<<strong>br</strong> />

mata ashita kimasu rainen Kyoto ni ikimasu<<strong>br</strong> />

[‘again tomorrow <strong>com</strong>e’] [‘next year Kyoto to go’]<<strong>br</strong> />

I’ll <strong>com</strong>e back tomorrow I’m going to Kyoto next year<<strong>br</strong> />

Asking Permission<<strong>br</strong> />

Asking permission to do something is indicated by the verb<<strong>br</strong> />

ending -te followed by ... i desu ka? (literally: is it allowed?):<<strong>br</strong> />

anata ni tegami o kaite i desu ka?<<strong>br</strong> />

[‘you to letter’ + ob. part. + ‘write is is allowed’ + question part.]<<strong>br</strong> />

can I write to you?<<strong>br</strong> />

Indicating Necessity<<strong>br</strong> />

Necessity is indicated by the verb ending -nakereba narimasen:<<strong>br</strong> />

ikimasu to go<<strong>br</strong> />

mo ikanakereba narimasen<<strong>br</strong> />

[‘already go must’]<<strong>br</strong> />

kore o Igirisu ni okuritai no desu ga<<strong>br</strong> />

[‘this’ + ob. part. + ‘England to send want request please’]<<strong>br</strong> />
