Women also tend to use emotional interjections more than<<strong>br</strong> />

men, such as ‘kawai’ (cute!) or ‘suteki!’ (marvellous!). To<<strong>br</strong> />

express surprise when meeting somebody unexpectedly,<<strong>br</strong> />

women tend to say ‘ma!’ or ‘ara!’, which are never used by<<strong>br</strong> />

men, who tend to say ‘ya!’ or ‘o!’.<<strong>br</strong> />

Japanese has two sets of numbers from one to ten:<<strong>br</strong> />

The first set is used when referring to expressions of time,<<strong>br</strong> />

quantities and measurements.They are used with the classifiers<<strong>br</strong> />

on the opposite page or with count words such as<<strong>br</strong> />

‘minute’,‘yen’ etc:<<strong>br</strong> />

five minutes an hour ago<<strong>br</strong> />

gozen shichiji ni ju-en<<strong>br</strong> />

at 7am 10 yen<<strong>br</strong> />

* The alternative numerals in the first set above must be used<<strong>br</strong> />

in the following time expressions:<<strong>br</strong> />

yoji shichiji kuji<<strong>br</strong> />

four o’clock seven o’clock nine o’clock<<strong>br</strong> />

The second set of numbers is used for counting any other<<strong>br</strong> />

things not mentioned above.The number is placed after the
