There has to be full and honest disclosure of the advantages and disadvantages of a CBRNM project Those that are affected by the setting up of such a project especially in terms of relocations need to be adequately compensated to reduce acrimony towards the project Revenue generated from the CBRNM project needs to be distributed timeously and in consideration of the level of costs/losses incurred by each individual/area Host communities need to be actively involved in decision making about the project and this entails devolution of authority (not only responsibility) to the host communities Project designers need to acknowledge the existence of indigenous knowledge within host communities and build on that Protected areas need to develop programmes/methods that ensure that host communities benefit from the vast estates within their environs, instead of just being ivory towers CAMPFIRE should be extended to encompass programmes such as photographic safaris and cultural tourism. Conclusion It is indisputable that there is huge economic potential from wildlife utilisation in both communal lands and protected government estates. However the real challenge is in transforming the potential into tangible benefit which can influence and be influenced by the host communities themselves. People-sensitive and people-oriented models have to be developed especially by the management of protected areas so as to bring on board host communities on the environs of these estates to benefit from what is essentially THEIR resource in all possible ways.
