Statistically, since both B<strong>on</strong>anza <strong>and</strong> Minn6 4_62 are<br />

homozygous <strong>and</strong> their mean yields were calculated from large<br />

nurnbers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pLots at each site, their st<strong>and</strong>ard errors should<br />

be a good estirnate <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the envÍr<strong>on</strong>mental error for yield over<br />

the whole study. With this st<strong>and</strong>ard error a least signífi-<br />

cant difference for yieJ-d could be computed. Such computa_<br />

ti<strong>on</strong> gave a least significant difference equal to 1l_0 grans<br />

per plot. 0n this basis, there were no significant differ-<br />

ences between the hlghest yielding lines: am<strong>on</strong>g the <str<strong>on</strong>g>height</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

categories, am<strong>on</strong>g the populati<strong>on</strong>s, or across the whole experinent.<br />

This result again stresses the need for further,<br />

more effective' yield testing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this rnaterial <strong>and</strong> indicates<br />

the inadequacy <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the techniques used to characterize the<br />

true yieldíng ability <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> these genotypes.<br />

The populati<strong>on</strong> nean ptant <str<strong>on</strong>g>height</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <strong>and</strong> yietds ind.ícated<br />

the possibility <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> yíetd potential in the short strawed<br />

cantly shorter than for C-ZO-L, C-?O-Z <strong>and</strong> B<strong>on</strong>anza (ín fact<br />
