at high N levels it showed superiority in alpha_anylase <strong>and</strong><br />

saccharifying activity, yet no increase in protein. The<br />

other semi-dwarf, Minn64-62, had serious linitati<strong>on</strong>s in<br />

terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> malting quality, particularly in its 1ow Ievels <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

alpha-amylase <strong>and</strong> saccharifying activity.<br />

Exarnining this experiment as it was c<strong>on</strong>ducted, it would<br />

appear that the most serious stress factor which harnpered<br />

the evaluati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the seni-dwarfs studied was weed eompeti._<br />

ti<strong>on</strong>. îhis occurred prirnarily at Carnan, most severely in<br />

1975, The se¡ni-dwarfs appeared to be less cornpetitive <strong>and</strong><br />

were more affected by the highty competitive weed.s, particu_<br />

larly wild oats. However, the adcliti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nitrogen improved<br />
