in particular c-lo-J, indicated. that lines with a desrrabLe<br />

combinatl<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> performânce characteristÍcs occured wíth<br />

greatest frequency am<strong>on</strong>g genotypes ln thi_s Íntermediate<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>height</str<strong>on</strong>g> category. lhese lines had improve¿l straw strength<br />

relatlve to the talLer lines, yet also had acceptable leve1s<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> yieLd <strong>and</strong> kernel size paramete!.s <strong>and</strong> more acceptabLe<br />

maturity. This was exemplified by C-|O-J, in which the<br />

majority <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> derived lines fell in the intermediate <str<strong>on</strong>g>height</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

class. Despite this.the populati.<strong>on</strong> means <strong>and</strong> ranges for<br />

most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the other eharacteristics were similar to those<br />

obtained am<strong>on</strong>g lines from the other two crosses, lodging<br />

being an exeepti<strong>on</strong>, but <strong>on</strong> the favourable side (fables g<br />

<strong>and</strong> 9).<br />

The high heritabitity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>plant</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>height</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>and</strong> the lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

c<strong>on</strong>petitive ability <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> semi-d.warfs relative to ta1l genotypes,<br />

suggest modifícati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>breeding</strong> procedures may be<br />

required 1n attempting to inprove <strong>and</strong> adapt semi-dwarfs by<br />

hybridizíng them with better performing taller genotypes<br />

available. fhe low incídence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> true semi_d.warfs indícated<br />

a need for large F, poÞulati<strong>on</strong>s, perferably at lower <str<strong>on</strong>g>plant</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
