1951). In the present study, lodging was also str<strong>on</strong>gly <strong>and</strong><br />

positively related to <str<strong>on</strong>g>height</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <strong>and</strong> the negative <str<strong>on</strong>g>height</str<strong>on</strong>g> to<br />

yield associati<strong>on</strong>s nay have been reflected fn the yield to<br />

lodging reìati<strong>on</strong>ships.<br />

Although this type <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> todging did not tead to yield<br />

reducti<strong>on</strong>s, it is tikely to result in harvest l0sses <strong>and</strong><br />

inc<strong>on</strong>venience at the farm level. Breeding for resistance<br />

to lodging at the late stage, through <str<strong>on</strong>g>height</str<strong>on</strong>g> reducti<strong>on</strong>,<br />

would therefore be a worthwhile goal.<br />

HÍgher yietds result fro¡n Íncreased carbohydrates in<br />

the grain, with c<strong>on</strong>sequent lowering <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the n5"trogen leve1<br />

<strong>on</strong> a percentage basÍs. Hence, the negative associatí<strong>on</strong>s<br />

between yield <strong>and</strong> nitrogen <strong>and</strong> two nftrogen-related quality<br />

parameters, soluble ar¿ino nitrogen <strong>and</strong> saccharifying activity<br />

are readily explained.<br />

Kerne]-g per spike. The negative c<strong>on</strong>elatí<strong>on</strong>s between<br />

this trait <strong>and</strong> kernel weight, plumpness <strong>and</strong> test weight<br />

probably resuLted fr<strong>on</strong> competÍti<strong>on</strong> within the spike for<br />

photosynthate during grain filling.<br />

îhe significant positive correlati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> kernels per<br />

spike wlth days to maturity <strong>and</strong> days ín post-anthesis were<br />

weak. In fact, that with rnâturity was not sÍgnificant in<br />
