Chapter 2 The Micro-Resonator In this chapter the basic principle behind the operation of the micro-resonator will be given and the basic equations that describe its operation will be derived. In addition it will be shown that the resonator has certain limitations concerning its Free Spectral Range and filter response. For this several solutions such as, for instance, the use of higher order filters are offered. In the final section of this chapter several methods of active tuning will be discussed because it is this tuning that gives the micro-resonator its attractive functionality as will be shown in several other chapters.
