Central <strong>Power</strong> Research Institute<br />

The Central <strong>Power</strong> Research Institute (CPRI), an<br />

autonomous Society, serves as a National<br />

Laboratory for undertaking applied research in<br />

electric power engineering besides functioning as<br />

an independent National Testing and Certification<br />

Authority for electrical equipment and components<br />

to ensure reliability and improve, innovate and<br />

develop new products. The Head Office <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Institute is at Bangalore and its other units are<br />

located at Bhopal, Hyderabad, Nagpur,<br />

Ghaziabad, Thiruvananthapuram and Raichur.<br />

The CPRI continued to play a vital role in quality<br />

assurance to ensure reliability <strong>of</strong> power<br />

equipment through testing and certification in<br />

accordance with National and International<br />

standards. The laboratories <strong>of</strong> CPRI are<br />

accredited as per latest ISO/IEC 17025 standards<br />

by National Accreditation Board for Testing &<br />

Calibration Laboratories (NABL). The Institute<br />

has been meeting its non-plan expenditure<br />

through revenue generated by testing and<br />

consultancy for the last fifteen years and the<br />

revenue has been increasing over the years.<br />

During the year 2003-04, the Institute’s revenue<br />

collection has touched an all time high level <strong>of</strong><br />

Rs.35.8 crores (unaudited) including the foreign<br />

exchange earnings <strong>of</strong> US$2.35 lakh from clientele<br />

across the middle-east and south-east nations.<br />

The CPRI is provided grant-in-aid for its Plan<br />

projects which includes the R&D Plan projects<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Institute and the coordination work on<br />

funding <strong>of</strong> Research schemes on power <strong>of</strong> various<br />

power utilities and power sector organizations.<br />

Real time digital Simulator Facility at CPRI, Bangalore<br />

The capital Plan projects <strong>of</strong> CPRI entitled “Center<br />

for S<strong>of</strong>tware Engineering & Training”;<br />

“Establishment <strong>of</strong> Equipment Vibration Testing<br />

Centre”; and “Establishment <strong>of</strong> Real Time Digital<br />

Simulator” facility sanctioned during the later<br />

years <strong>of</strong> 9 th Five Year Plan have been successfully<br />

commissioned and completed in the year under<br />

report. During the 10 th Five Year Plan, the CPRI<br />

have so far been sanctioned five capital projects<br />

which are in various stages <strong>of</strong> implementation.<br />

CPRI has been entrusted with assisting 9<br />

distribution circles in the state <strong>of</strong> Karnataka,<br />

Kerala & Andhra Pradesh in improving the<br />

distribution network under APDRP prpogramme.<br />

CPRI has established Site Offices with all<br />

infrastructure facilities at these places and 9<br />

Nodal Officers have been posted at these places.<br />

Based on the detailed Project Reports for these<br />

states funds have been released and the<br />

implementation <strong>of</strong> APDRP works is ongoing in<br />

all the nine circles.<br />

The Institute has stepped up its marketing<br />

activities by participating in various exhibitions<br />

in India and abroad with a view to project the<br />

facilities / expertise available with them to the<br />

prospective customers. Within the country,<br />

emphasis was laid on marketing <strong>of</strong> third party<br />

inspection services for power equipment procured<br />

by Utilities. As a result <strong>of</strong> this, the Institute<br />

got repeat orders for third party inspection<br />

services from Utilities such as KPTCL, BESCOM,<br />

TNEB, J&K Electricity Board, UHBVN, DHBVN,<br />

HVPNL, Delhi Vidyut Board, APTRANSCO.,<br />

APEDCL etc.<br />
