2003. The benefit from this project is expected<br />

in early part <strong>of</strong> 11th plan.<br />

NTPC has signed a Memorandum <strong>of</strong><br />

Understanding (MoU) with the Government <strong>of</strong><br />

Uttaranchal for taking up execution <strong>of</strong> Loharinag<br />

Pala Hydro Project (600 MW) near Uttarkashi<br />

on river Bhagirathi and Tapovan-Vishnugad<br />

Hydro Project (520 MW) near Joshimath on<br />

river Alaknanda. First stage site clearance and<br />

defense clearance for these projects have been<br />

obtained. Preliminary Project Reports for<br />

Loharinag Pala HEP (4x150 MW) and<br />

Tapovan Vishnugad HEP (4x130 MW) have<br />

been submitted to CEA. Detailed Project<br />

Reports are ready. NTPC is also looking into<br />

the possibility <strong>of</strong> considering another 4000-5000<br />

MW Hydro projects subject to timely availability<br />

<strong>of</strong> resources etc. with a view to achieve capacity<br />

addition <strong>of</strong> around15, 000-16,000 MW during the<br />

eleventh plan<br />

To boost its capacity addition programme in the<br />

Hydro Sector, the Corporation has formed a<br />

subsidiary company “NTPC Hydro Ltd.” for<br />

development <strong>of</strong> small and medium scale<br />

hydropower projects, <strong>of</strong> capacity upto 250 MW.<br />

The Government <strong>of</strong> Uttaranchal has allotted Lata-<br />

Tapovan (108 MW) HEP for implementation<br />

by NTPC Hydro Ltd. An MOU to this effect<br />

has already been signed.<br />

LNG Procurement<br />

NTPC has invited bids under International<br />

Competitive Bidding (ICB) process for sourcing<br />

<strong>of</strong> LNG/Natural Gas for expansion <strong>of</strong> gas projects<br />

in Western Region at the first instance,<br />

which is in advance stage <strong>of</strong> finalisation.<br />

First availability <strong>of</strong> LNG/Natural Gas is expected<br />

by year 2007-08. For sourcing <strong>of</strong> LNG relating<br />

to capacity addition at Kayamkulam (for existing<br />

350 MW and expansion <strong>of</strong> 1950 MW), separate<br />

International Competitive Bidding Process has<br />

been initiated.<br />

Coal Mining and Coal Washeries<br />

NTPC has decided to undertake captive mining<br />

to ensure alternative supply <strong>of</strong> coal for meeting<br />

its ever-growing coal requirements. In this<br />

connection, NTPC has identified number <strong>of</strong> coal<br />

blocks in Talcher & North Karanpura coalfields<br />

and has approached <strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> Coal through<br />

<strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Power</strong> for their allotment to NTPC.<br />

NTPC is also planning to set up Coal Washeries.<br />

Joint Ventures<br />

A Strategic Alliance<br />

To tap the growing potential in the field <strong>of</strong><br />

power globally, the Company has entered<br />

into a strategic alliance with Black &<br />

Veatch(B&V),an Internationally acclaimed<br />

Company based in USA. An MOU has<br />

been executed between NTPC and B&V to<br />

collaborate, on project to project basis, to<br />

provide efficient and reliable services for<br />

Operational & Maintenance <strong>of</strong> Thermal <strong>Power</strong><br />

Plants and for setting up state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art<br />

power plants for clients in India and abroad.<br />

Various other allied services are also covered<br />

in this MOU<br />

Existing Joint Ventures<br />

UTILITY POWERTECH LTD. (UPL) (a joint<br />

Venture Company <strong>of</strong> NTPC & BSES) which<br />

was formed to take up assignments <strong>of</strong><br />

construction, erection and supervision in<br />

power sector and other sectors in India and<br />

abroad is progressing satisfactorily. The<br />

turnover <strong>of</strong> the Company for the year<br />

2002-2003 was Rs.77.88 crore and pr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

after tax was Rs.4.62 crore. UPL has<br />

received cumulative orders <strong>of</strong> Rs.18.80 crore<br />

(other than <strong>Power</strong> Station Maintenance<br />

Agreement) during the period April 2003 to<br />

March 2004. The turnover and pr<strong>of</strong>it for<br />

the year 2003-2004 have been<br />

Provisionally worked out as Rs.88 crore<br />

& Rs. 3.45 crore (after tax) respectively.<br />

“NTPC ALSTOM POWER SERVICES PVT.<br />

LIMITED” (NASL)<br />

NTPC has formed a JV Company with ALSTOM<br />

POWER GENERATION AG, (formally ABB<br />

KRAFTWERKE AG), under the name <strong>of</strong> “NTPC<br />

ALSTOM POWER SERVICES PVT. LIMITED”,<br />

(NASL) for taking up Renovation &<br />

Modernization assignments <strong>of</strong> <strong>Power</strong> Plants<br />

both in India and abroad. NASL has<br />

achieved a turn over <strong>of</strong> Rs.34.89 crore and pr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

after tax <strong>of</strong> Rs.44.16 lakhs during the year<br />

2002-2003. The provisional turnover and<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>it (after tax) for the year 2003-2004 is<br />

worked out as Rs.100.43 crore & Rs.3.34 crore<br />

respectively.<br />

<strong>Power</strong> Trading Corporation <strong>of</strong> India Ltd. (PTC)<br />

A Company viz. <strong>Power</strong> Trading Corporation <strong>of</strong><br />

India Ltd. Has been formed with an Authorized<br />

Capital <strong>of</strong> Rs.750 crore and paid up capital <strong>of</strong><br />

Rs.91.5 crore. NTPC, NHPC, PGCIL and PFC<br />

have contributed Rs.12 crore each. Tata<br />

<strong>Power</strong> has contributed a total <strong>of</strong> Rs.15 crore<br />

and DVC has contributed Rs.10 crore. FIIs’<br />

have contributed Rs.18.5 crore. PTC is purchasing<br />

power from power Station /SEB’s having surplus<br />

power and selling it to the SEB’s needing power.<br />

The turnover for the year 2002-03 was Rs.927<br />

crore and net pr<strong>of</strong>it after Tax Rs.9.84 crore.
