(NHPC)<br />

National Hydroelectric <strong>Power</strong> Corporation (NHPC)<br />

was set up in 1975. NHPC has become the<br />

largest organisation for Hydro <strong>Power</strong> development<br />

in India, with capabilities to undertake all the<br />

activities from conceptualization to commissioning<br />

<strong>of</strong> Hydro Projects. Execution <strong>of</strong> Geothermal and<br />

Tidal <strong>Power</strong> Projects in the country has also<br />

been included in the corporate objectives <strong>of</strong><br />

NHPC.<br />

NHPC is a Schedule “A” Enterprise <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Government <strong>of</strong> India with an Authorized Share<br />

Capital <strong>of</strong> Rs. 15,000 Crores and an Investment<br />

base more than Rs. 20,000 Crores.<br />

The Corporation has following operating power<br />

stations and under-construction projects -<br />

A. OPERATING POWER STATIONS<br />

Following eight Projects have been commissioned<br />

by NHPC in India :<br />

1. Baira Siul (HP)1 180 MW (3x60 MW)<br />

2. Loktak (Manipur) 105 MW (3x35 MW)<br />

3. Salal (J&K) 690 MW (6x115 MW)<br />

4. Chamera -I (HP) 540 MW (3x180 MW)<br />

5. Tanakpur (U’chal)1 120 MW (3 x 40 MW)<br />

6. Uri (J&K) 480 MW (4x120 MW)<br />

7. Rangit (Sikkim) 60 MW (3 x 20 MW)<br />

8. Chamera - II (HP) 300 MW (3x 100 MW)<br />

2475 MW<br />

During the current financial year (upto March<br />

2004), NHPC <strong>Power</strong> Stations generated 11045.52<br />

MU against the target <strong>of</strong> 9400 MU excluding a<br />

deemed generation <strong>of</strong> 70.82 MU.<br />

B. ONGOING PROJECTS<br />

(Status ending March 2004)<br />

1. Dulhasti HE Project (3x130 MW), J&K<br />

Excavation <strong>of</strong> Head Race Tunnel has been<br />

completed on 27.08.03. 5812m (58.42%) HRT<br />

Lining has been done till March 04. The balance<br />

lining work <strong>of</strong> HRT is expected to be completed<br />

by Nov.’04. All other works except HRT has<br />

already been completed.<br />

2. Dhauliganga HE Project, Stage-I (4x70<br />

MW) Uttaranchal<br />

Day Lighting <strong>of</strong> 5290 M long Head Race Tunnel<br />

achieved on 30.06.2003.Completion <strong>of</strong> 437 M long<br />

Tail Race Tunnel Concrete lining in May 2003.<br />

Chapter - 21.2<br />

985500 cum (98.55%) <strong>of</strong> Spillway Excavation<br />

has been done. 8, 30,500 cum (83.05%) <strong>of</strong><br />

Dam embankment placement has been done .<br />

Flip Bucket Excavation completed in May<br />

2003.Concrete lining <strong>of</strong> Silt flushing Tunnel has<br />

been completed in October 2003.Concrete lining<br />

<strong>of</strong> 112 M long Intake Tunnel-I and 96 M long<br />

Intake Tunnel-II has been completed in<br />

September 2003 and May 2003 respectively.4416<br />

M (83.47%) concrete lining <strong>of</strong> Head race Tunnel<br />

has been done. Surge Shaft excavation has been<br />

completed in November 2003. 52M Surge Shaft<br />

lining has been achieved out <strong>of</strong> 95m. Steel<br />

liner erection in pressure shafts has been<br />

completed. Erection <strong>of</strong> generating units is in<br />

progress. The project is scheduled to be<br />

commissioned by March’05.<br />

3. Chamera HE Project Stage-II (300 MW),<br />

HP<br />

The Project is being executed on Turnkey basis<br />

and agreements with the consortium members<br />

were signed on 18.7.99. M/s Indo Canadian<br />

Hydro Consortium. The Project has been<br />

commissioned ahead <strong>of</strong> schedule. The Project<br />

was dedicated to the Nation by Hon’ble Prime<br />

Minister <strong>of</strong> India on 9.2.2004.<br />

4. Teesta HE Project Stage-V (3x170 MW),<br />

Sikkim<br />

Teesta –V located in East Sikkim is a run <strong>of</strong><br />

river peaking scheme on Teesta river. The project<br />

is to generate 2573 MUs <strong>of</strong> Energy in a 90 %<br />

dependable year. All the major works are going<br />

as per schedule and Project is expected to be<br />

completed as per schedule i.e. by Feb. 07.<br />

5. Teesta Low Dam Project, Stage-III (132<br />

MW), West Bengal.<br />

Teesta Low Dam Project-III (132 MW) was<br />

entrusted to NHPC on 15th Nov. 2000. Govt.<br />

accorded CCEA clearance on 30/10/2003 with<br />

completion schedule <strong>of</strong> Project as March 2007.<br />

Major Civil Works have been awarded in Oct’03.<br />

6. Subansiri (Lower) HE Project (2000 MW)<br />

Ar. Pradesh.<br />

Subansiri Lower HE Project (2000 MW) was<br />

entrusted to NHPC on 1st May 2000 Govt.<br />

accorded CCEA clearance on 9th Sept. 2003<br />

with completion period <strong>of</strong> Project in 7 years.<br />

Major civil works have been awarded.<br />
