KV Tanakpur - Mahendra Nagar Transmission<br />

Line. The line and transformer bay at Tanakpur<br />

end were constructed by Government <strong>of</strong> India.<br />

Out <strong>of</strong> the energy supplied through this line,<br />

70 MU <strong>of</strong> energy is supplied to Nepal free <strong>of</strong><br />

cost every year. Development <strong>of</strong> Tanakpur <strong>Power</strong><br />

Station has contributed a lot to the development<br />

<strong>of</strong> neighbouring areas in Nepal, especially<br />

Mahendra Nagar town.<br />

Recently, NHPC has taken up initiative for<br />

construction <strong>of</strong> 300 MW Upper Karnali <strong>Power</strong><br />

Station in Nepal on BOOT basis. A portion <strong>of</strong><br />

power generated at this power station is<br />

envisaged to be supplied to Nepal and the<br />

balance quantum <strong>of</strong> power will be imported by<br />

India. NHPC has conducted preliminary surveys<br />

<strong>of</strong> the project site and action for entering into<br />

MOU with HMGN is in progress. The cost <strong>of</strong><br />

the project will be approximately Rs. 2000 crores.<br />

This project is expected to bring about<br />

phenomenal change in the economy <strong>of</strong> the<br />

people <strong>of</strong> the area around the project by way <strong>of</strong><br />

huge expenditure on infrastructure, project<br />

construction, operation & maintenance,<br />

rehabilitation & resettlement and creation <strong>of</strong> other<br />

civic amenities.<br />

Tamanthi HE Project (1200MW) on river Chindwin<br />

(Irrawady) is proposed to be developed as mutual<br />

interest project between India and Myanmar. A<br />

fact finding mission led by Member (Hydro), CEA<br />

visited Myanmar in Feb 1999, followed by Joint<br />

Site Inspection by technical representative <strong>of</strong> India<br />

and Myanmar in November’99. The Indian team<br />

comprised <strong>of</strong> experts from CEA, CWC, NHPC<br />

and GSI. The technical team <strong>of</strong> Nov. 1999<br />

identified two potential projects sites for<br />

development viz. Tazon and Hwena. An Indian<br />

team visited Myanmar in April/May, 2000 and<br />

established Gauge and discharge stations at<br />

Tazon and Hkamti and studied general geology<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Project sites. Subsequently, another G&D<br />

site was established at Hwena in April 2002.<br />

<strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> External Affairs entrusted the work<br />

for preparation <strong>of</strong> Pre feasibility report (PFR) <strong>of</strong><br />

the Tamanthi Project to NHPC in June 2003.<br />

NHPC team visited Myanmar in November’2003<br />

and held detailed discussions about<br />

responsibilities and obligations <strong>of</strong> Myanmar side<br />

and NHPC for carrying various technical / field<br />

studies for Pre feasibility report preparation<br />

.NHPC has collected relevant data pertaining to<br />

the project and shall be developing further data<br />

through conducting surveys and investigations<br />

at site. The formal letter <strong>of</strong> award for start <strong>of</strong><br />

work has been received from <strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> External<br />

Affairs in April 04. The work <strong>of</strong> PFR is expected<br />

to be completed by March, 2005 keeping in<br />

view the ensuing rainy season.<br />

A delegation from NHPC comprising Director<br />

(Technical), Executive Director (Design &<br />

Engineering ) & Chief Engineer (Planning) visited<br />

Uzbekistan in the month <strong>of</strong> April, 2003 and<br />

Tajikistan in the month <strong>of</strong> October, 2003 to<br />

explore the possibility <strong>of</strong> setting up a small<br />

hydropower project in those countries.<br />

The delegation studied the small hydro power<br />

projects proposed by Uzbekistan Authorities for<br />

development and visited Shahrihan HPS No. 0<br />

<strong>of</strong> proposed 24.8 MW capacities and noted that<br />

this was a technical feasible and implementable<br />

project. The committee has submitted its<br />

recommendations to MEA and MOP, Govt. <strong>of</strong><br />

India and has recommended that the above said<br />

project can be considered for development under<br />

cooperation between India and Uzbekistan.<br />

In Tajikistan, the delegation visited Varzob-I<br />

Hydropower Plant which required renovation &<br />

modernisation. It also visited project site <strong>of</strong><br />

proposed Marzich Project (2.627 MW) and a<br />

few potential sites on Iskanderdarya river. The<br />

delegation has submitted its report to <strong>Ministry</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> External Affairs and <strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Power</strong><br />

Government <strong>of</strong> India, and recommended that<br />

cooperation between India and Tajikistan can be<br />

done in the following:<br />

a) Renovation, Modernisation and Uprating <strong>of</strong><br />

Varzob HPP-I (2 x 3.7 MW) & HPP- II<br />

(14.4 MW) Projects.<br />

b) Survey for mapping <strong>of</strong> hydropower potential<br />

<strong>of</strong> Varzob river and Iskanderdarya river,<br />

identification <strong>of</strong> suitable projects and<br />

preparation <strong>of</strong> DPR there<strong>of</strong>.<br />

c) Implementation <strong>of</strong> Marzich Project after<br />

required additional investigations and<br />

preparation <strong>of</strong> DPR.<br />

However, currently as desired by MEA, renovation<br />

and modernization <strong>of</strong> Varzob-1 & II Projects is<br />

being proposed to be taken up. Embassy <strong>of</strong><br />

India, Tajikistan has been requested to furnish<br />

basic necessary data <strong>of</strong> these two plants and<br />

also furnish the schedule / dates <strong>of</strong> visit <strong>of</strong> NHPC<br />

Technical team in consultation with Tajik<br />

authorities.
