Writing Track<br />

Completion <strong>of</strong> this track will be noted on<br />

the English major’s transcript. <strong>The</strong> student<br />

must complete a minimum <strong>of</strong> five courses (15<br />

credits) designated with the WRTG prefix<br />

and numbered at the 200 level or above. Of<br />

these five courses, at least one must be in Creative<br />

Writing (WRTG 213, 214, 215, 216,<br />

217, 313, 314, 315, 316), and at least one<br />

must be in Applied Writing (WRTG 210,<br />

211, 212).<br />

<strong>The</strong>atre Major<br />

As a major existing within the English<br />

Department, <strong>The</strong>atre <strong>of</strong>fers a broad-based liberal<br />

arts degree for the theatre generalist. <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong>atre major prepares the student for further,<br />

more focused training in the theatrical<br />

arts through a wide variety <strong>of</strong> courses in performance<br />

arts, technical theatre, design arts,<br />

directing, theatre history, playwriting and dramatic<br />

literature. Students may focus their programs<br />

<strong>of</strong> study to some degree toward specific<br />

interests in these areas <strong>of</strong> theatre through the<br />

use <strong>of</strong> electives within the major.<br />

<strong>The</strong>atre majors are strongly encouraged to<br />

complete either a minor (perhaps in English<br />

or Writing) or a second major (perhaps in<br />

English). Other combinations are possible.<br />

<strong>The</strong>atre majors are required to participate<br />

in <strong>University</strong> Players productions; <strong>The</strong>atre<br />

minors are strongly encouraged to do so. All<br />

students with an interest in theatre, whatever<br />

their major, are invited to participate in <strong>University</strong><br />

Players productions. (See also “<strong>The</strong>atre”<br />

under Extracurricular Activities.)<br />

Students majoring in <strong>The</strong>atre are required<br />

to take three introductory courses in <strong>The</strong>atre,<br />

Acting, and Technical <strong>The</strong>atre (THTR 110,<br />

111, 112), two <strong>The</strong>atre History courses<br />

(THTR 211, 212), Design for the <strong>The</strong>atre<br />

(THTR 213), Directing I (THTR 311), and<br />

5 credits <strong>of</strong> Production Laboratory (THTR<br />

280, 380). Four elective courses in <strong>The</strong>atre<br />

round out the major. Introduction to Drama<br />

(ENLT 122), and at least one other course in<br />

Dramatic Literature are required in the student’s<br />

cognate area. Courses which would satisfy<br />

the Dramatic Literature requirement<br />

include ENLT 211, 220, 295, 340, 341, 345,<br />

355, 461.<br />

Minors within the<br />

English Department<br />

English Minor<br />

To minor in English, the student must take<br />

a minimum <strong>of</strong> six courses (18 credits). One <strong>of</strong><br />

these courses must be ENLT 140 or the<br />

equivalent (see above). <strong>The</strong> remaining 15<br />

credits must be taken in courses that would<br />

satisfy area or elective requirements for the<br />

major. No more than two courses with a<br />

number between 120 and 179 may be<br />

counted toward the minor.<br />

<strong>The</strong>atre Minor<br />

To minor in <strong>The</strong>atre, the student must take<br />

a minimum <strong>of</strong> six courses (18 credits). Three<br />

courses are required: THTR 110, THTR 111<br />

and either THTR 211 or THTR 212. Elective<br />

courses counted toward the minor<br />

include any course with the THTR prefix<br />

and/or WRTG 215, 217, or 315. <strong>The</strong> student<br />

may also include one <strong>of</strong> the following literature<br />

courses: ENLT 122, 211, 220, 295, 340,<br />

341, 345, 355, 461.<br />

Writing Minor<br />

To minor in Writing, the student must take<br />

a minimum <strong>of</strong> six courses (18 credits). All six<br />

courses must carry the WRTG prefix, and all<br />

six must be listed at the 200 level or above.<br />

<strong>The</strong> student must take at least one course in<br />

Creative Writing (WRTG 213, 214, 215,<br />

216, 217, 313, 314, 315, 316) and one course<br />

in Applied Writing (WRTG 210, 211, 212).<br />

Literature<br />

ENLT 103 3 cr.<br />

Children’s Literature<br />

A broad study <strong>of</strong> literature for children since<br />

1800, with the emphasis on American works<br />

since 1950, including aesthetic consideration <strong>of</strong><br />

the art and design <strong>of</strong> picture books. Works for<br />

children up to the age <strong>of</strong> 12 are considered.<br />

ENLT 110 3 cr.<br />

History <strong>of</strong> Cinema<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> the historical development <strong>of</strong> motion<br />

pictures. Practitioners in America and throughout<br />

the world are treated in this concise history<br />

<strong>of</strong> cinema. Film screening fee.
