researchers. Requirements: completion <strong>of</strong> one<br />
half <strong>of</strong> the curriculum, demonstrated ability<br />
in nursing, a grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.0 and<br />
rank in the upper one-third <strong>of</strong> the class. <strong>The</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong>’s Iota Omega Chapter was chartered<br />
in April 1988.<br />
Kappa Delta Pi<br />
<strong>The</strong> International Honor Society for education<br />
established in 1911, the Sigma Chi<br />
chapter was installed here at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Scranton</strong> in 1992. It joins over 500 chapters<br />
from around the world in fidelity to four<br />
cherished ideals: Humanity, Science, Service<br />
and Toil.<br />
Beta Beta Beta<br />
National Honor Society for biology<br />
founded in 1922. <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s chapter,<br />
established in 1994, is one <strong>of</strong> 372 chapters<br />
nationwide. <strong>The</strong> society encourages undergraduate<br />
biological research through presentations<br />
at conventions, publication in the journal<br />
BIOS, and research/travel grants. All<br />
undergraduate students interested in biology<br />
may join as associate members. A regular<br />
member must be a junior or senior with 3.0<br />
grade point average in biology and having<br />
completed at least three biology courses (one<br />
upper level) and in good academic standing at<br />
the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
Sigma Phi Omega<br />
<strong>The</strong> National Honor Society in gerontology.<br />
Founded in 1980, its purpose is to recognize<br />
those students who excel in gerontology<br />
as well as pr<strong>of</strong>essional aging-service personnel.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Gamma Epsilon chapter was<br />
established in April 1997. Membership is<br />
open to students who have at least 18 credits<br />
completed in gerontology/aging studies with a<br />
grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.3.<br />
Beta Gamma Sigma*<br />
Beta Gamma Sigma is the only business<br />
honor society recognized by the AACSB, the<br />
International Association for Management<br />
Education. Basic requirements: ranking in the<br />
top 10% <strong>of</strong> the class with a major in business<br />
and management programs. <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s<br />

in spring 1997.<br />
Lambda Pi Eta*<br />
<strong>The</strong> National Honor Society for communication<br />
majors founded in 1985 to honor and<br />
encourage high levels <strong>of</strong> scholarship and leadership<br />
in the field <strong>of</strong> communications. <strong>The</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> chapter was installed in 1999.<br />
Membership requires junior-level status, at<br />
least 12 credits and a grade point average <strong>of</strong><br />
3.25 in communication studies, and a cumulative<br />
grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.0.<br />
Alpha Lambda Delta<br />
<strong>The</strong> National Honor Society <strong>of</strong> Freshmen,<br />
Alpha Lambda Delta was founded in 1924 to<br />
honor excellent academic achievement by students<br />
in the first year <strong>of</strong> study. <strong>The</strong> Richard<br />
H. Passon Chapter <strong>of</strong> the Society was<br />
installed at the <strong>University</strong> on March 24,<br />
2001. Membership requires enrollment as a<br />
full-time student in a degree program, and a<br />
grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.5 or above at the end<br />
<strong>of</strong> the first semester <strong>of</strong> the freshman year.<br />

Harry and Jeanette Weinberg<br />
Memorial Library<br />
Opened in 1992, the holdings <strong>of</strong> this<br />
80,000-square-foot, five-story building include<br />
443,144 volumes, 1,750 print periodical subscriptions,<br />
over 13,000 full-text electronic<br />
journals, and 510,360 micr<strong>of</strong>orm pieces. <strong>The</strong><br />
Library conducts an extensive user-education<br />
program to orient and instruct students in<br />
resources and research techniques. <strong>The</strong> facility<br />
includes the following special features:<br />
• group-study rooms and quiet study areas;<br />
• a 24-hour study room (Pro Deo Room)<br />
with computer lab and Java City C<strong>of</strong>fee<br />
Bar;<br />
• fifth-floor reading room (<strong>Scranton</strong> Heritage<br />
Room) overlooking the campus and<br />
community;<br />
• <strong>University</strong> Archives and Special Collections,<br />
which houses <strong>University</strong> historical<br />
records, rare books, faculty publications<br />
and other special collections; and
