28 Scholarships and Financial Aid<br />

<strong>The</strong> John and Lucille Guzey Scholarship: Begun<br />

in 1978, this scholarship assists members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Scranton</strong> Boys and Girls Club as well as students<br />

with financial need.<br />

<strong>The</strong> A.J. Guzzi General Contractors, Inc.,<br />

Scholarship: Angelo J. Guzzi created this scholarship<br />

to assist qualified and deserving students<br />

from a high school in Abington Heights, Valley<br />

View, Mid-Valley or Lakeland. <strong>The</strong> recipient is<br />

an incoming freshman who demonstrates financial<br />

need.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rev. Joseph M. Hamernick, S.J., Scholarship:<br />

This scholarship, established by the <strong>Scranton</strong><br />

Jesuit Community to honor one <strong>of</strong> its own, provides<br />

financial assistance based on academic<br />

excellence and demonstrated need.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rev. Dexter Hanley, S.J., Scholarship: This<br />

scholarship, named for the late Dexter Hanley,<br />

S.J., Esq., former president <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Scranton</strong>, assists nieces and nephews <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

Jesuit personnel.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Sarkis R. Hazzouri, Jr., Memorial<br />

Scholarship: This scholarship was established in<br />

1997 to assist incoming freshmen from Lackawanna<br />

County. First preference is given to graduates<br />

<strong>of</strong> West <strong>Scranton</strong> High School who intend<br />

to enroll in <strong>The</strong> Kania School <strong>of</strong> Management.<br />

<strong>The</strong> William Randolph Hearst Foundation<br />

Scholarship: Graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Scranton</strong>’s pre-college program, the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Success, are eligible to receive this scholarship.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rev. William B. Hill, S.J., Scholarship: This<br />

scholarship was established by the late Gerardine<br />

C. Hill to honor her brother, Rev. William B.<br />

Hill, S.J. Between 1969 and 2002, Fr. Hill<br />

served in several administrative positions at <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong>, including that <strong>of</strong> special<br />

assistant to the president.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Hill Neighborhood Association/Peter Cheung<br />

Scholarship: This scholarship, named in honor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Peter Cheung, who died in an accident while<br />

an undergraduate, benefits a junior or a senior<br />

who has demonstrated service to the neighborhood<br />

and the <strong>University</strong> community. Preference<br />

is given to residents <strong>of</strong> the city <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong>’s Hill<br />

neighborhood.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Hoeschele-Steinmetz Scholarship: This<br />

scholarship was established by General Electric<br />

in honor <strong>of</strong> David B. Hoeschele ’50. Mr.<br />

Hoeschele was chosen by General Electric for a<br />

prestigious award for his leadership in the field<br />

<strong>of</strong> electronic circuit design. He requested that<br />

funds be used to establish a scholarship for<br />

United States citizens or permanent residents<br />

from Northeastern Pennsylvania, who are<br />

enrolled as full-time undergraduates in either the<br />

physics or electrical engineering program. This<br />

scholarship is based on need and academic<br />

merit.<br />

<strong>The</strong> George Ronald Holmes, Ph.D., Scholarship:<br />

Dr. Holmes, an alumnus <strong>of</strong> the Class <strong>of</strong> 1961,<br />

and his wife started this scholarship to provide<br />

aid to junior and senior psychology majors.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Robert V. Horger Scholarship: This scholarship,<br />

established by Robert V. Horger, a prominent<br />

<strong>Scranton</strong> banker, is given to qualified students<br />

from the incoming freshman class who<br />

demonstrate financial need.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Frank and Jean Hubbard Scholarship: This<br />

scholarship, established through a generous gift<br />

from Frank and Jean Hubbard, is for graduates<br />

<strong>of</strong> North Pocono High School in the top 25%<br />

<strong>of</strong> their class who have demonstrated financial<br />

need.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ITT Scholarship: <strong>The</strong> International Telephone<br />

and Telegraph Corporation established<br />

this scholarship to encourage students to pursue<br />

academic excellence. <strong>The</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Admissions<br />

annually selects an incoming freshman to receive<br />

the scholarship, which is renewable on the basis<br />

<strong>of</strong> academic achievement.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Jesuit Community Scholarship: Substantial<br />

annual gifts from <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong><br />

Jesuit Community have made possible an endowment<br />

to provide unrestricted scholarship aid to<br />

deserving students. Most scholarships are based<br />

on financial need and academic achievement.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Jethro Scholarship: Established by a <strong>University</strong><br />

faculty member, Dr. Everett R. Brown, this<br />

scholarship is awarded to a freshman management,<br />

marketing or economics/ finance major<br />

who demonstrates that he or she has earned a<br />

significant amount <strong>of</strong> total college expenses. It is<br />

not dependent upon financial status <strong>of</strong> parents<br />

or guardians nor high school grades, and is available<br />

for four years, as long as the recipient maintains<br />

a grade point average <strong>of</strong> 3.00 or better.<br />

<strong>The</strong> B. Carl Jones Memorial Scholarship: This<br />

scholarship was established in 1988 by family,<br />

friends and colleagues <strong>of</strong> the late B. Carl Jones, a<br />

<strong>University</strong> trustee and benefactor. <strong>The</strong> scholarship<br />

provides financial assistance, based on need,<br />

to students from Lackawanna County who are<br />

enrolled in <strong>The</strong> Kania School <strong>of</strong> Management.
