<strong>The</strong> Martha Fitch Scholarship: In 1955 a<br />

bequest was made to the <strong>University</strong> by Miss<br />

Martha Fitch, a retired nurse and former superintendent<br />

<strong>of</strong> Thompson Hospital, <strong>Scranton</strong>.<br />

Income is used to provide scholarships for needy<br />

and deserving students.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rev. John J. Fitzpatrick, S.J., Scholarship:<br />

This scholarship honors the Rev. John J. Fitzpatrick,<br />

S.J., who, prior to his death in 1987,<br />

served <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> for 22 years<br />

in various roles including dean <strong>of</strong> men, Jesuit<br />

minister, student counselor and <strong>University</strong> chaplain.<br />

<strong>The</strong> scholarship helps students <strong>of</strong> academic<br />

excellence who have demonstrated financial need.<br />

Preference is given to students from Northeastern<br />

Pennsylvania who are enrolled in Dexter<br />

Hanley College. <strong>The</strong> scholarship was established<br />

through the generosity <strong>of</strong> Midori Y. Rynn,<br />

Ph.D., pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Sociology/Criminal Justice.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Fitzsimmons Family Scholarship: Mr. and<br />

Mrs. Edward Fitzsimmons <strong>of</strong> Gladwyne, Pennsylvania<br />

established this scholarship in 1996. It<br />

is intended to benefit qualified freshmen from<br />

northeast Pennsylvania with demonstrated need.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Fleet Pennsylvania Services Scholarship:<br />

Sons and daughters <strong>of</strong> Fleet Pennsylvania Services<br />

employees are eligible for this scholarship.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s financial aid <strong>of</strong>fice selects students<br />

on the basis <strong>of</strong> financial need.<br />

<strong>The</strong> James H. Foy, M.D., Memorial Scholarship:<br />

Established in 1987 by Dr. and Mrs. Joseph J.<br />

Rupp to honor Dr. Foy, whose encouragement<br />

and support helped Dr. Rupp in his education,<br />

the scholarship is given to premedical students<br />

who also demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in the<br />

humanities.<br />

<strong>The</strong> James M. Franey Scholarship: This scholarship,<br />

started from a bequest from the estate <strong>of</strong><br />

Mr. James M. Franey, benefits students from<br />

Northeastern Pennsylvania.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Sara G. Friel Memorial Scholarship: Before<br />

her death in 1982, Sara G. Friel, aunt <strong>of</strong> then–<br />

<strong>University</strong> president, Rev. William J. Byron, S.J.,<br />

directed that part <strong>of</strong> her estate be used to assist<br />

deserving and financially needy students each<br />

year.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Joseph P. Gallagher Memorial Scholarship:<br />

<strong>The</strong> Greater <strong>Scranton</strong> Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce<br />

created this scholarship in 1995 to honor the<br />

memory <strong>of</strong> Mr. Gallagher, who was employed by<br />

the Chamber for 15 years. <strong>The</strong> scholarship is<br />

given annually to a senior who is the son or<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> an employee <strong>of</strong> any current member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Chamber.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Morris and Mae Gelb Scholarship: Established<br />

in 1989 through gifts from the Gelbs and<br />

members <strong>of</strong> their family and friends, this scholarship<br />

benefits deserving and needy students <strong>of</strong> all<br />

faiths attending the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rev. Joseph G. Gilbride, S.T.D., Memorial<br />

Scholarship: This scholarship is for residents <strong>of</strong><br />

Peckville (Blakely Borough), Carbondale,<br />

Throop, Nanticoke, and the Parsons Section <strong>of</strong><br />

Wilkes-Barre and Plymouth, all <strong>of</strong> Northeastern<br />

Pennsylvania. It was established by Fr. Joseph G.<br />

Gilbride, prior to his death, to provide assistance<br />

to needy and worthy students.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Dr. and Mrs. John Giunta Scholarship:<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Giunta created this scholarship out <strong>of</strong><br />

his loyalty to <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> and his<br />

appreciation for the fine education his own children<br />

received here. <strong>The</strong> scholarship is given to<br />

students pursuing degrees in economics.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Peter S. Graybar Memorial Scholarship:<br />

Created to honor Peter S. Graybar, a beloved<br />

friend and active member <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Scranton</strong>’s Class <strong>of</strong> 1993, this scholarship provides<br />

assistance to a junior who has demonstrated<br />

active involvement in extracurricular<br />

activities.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Edward T. Groncki Scholarship: Established<br />

to honor the memory <strong>of</strong> a <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong><br />

alumnus, this scholarship is for deserving<br />

young men and women who live in Lackawanna<br />

County.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Irving and Edythe Grossman Scholarship:<br />

This scholarship was created out <strong>of</strong> the generosity<br />

<strong>of</strong> Irving and Edythe Grossman and is a<br />

memorial in their honor. Eligible students must<br />

demonstrate academic achievement and participation<br />

in community service.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Judge Frederick W. Gunster Scholarship:<br />

<strong>The</strong> estate <strong>of</strong> Joseph F. Gunster ’17 provided<br />

funds for this merit scholarship to honor the<br />

memory <strong>of</strong> Joseph’s father.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Margaret Gunster Scholarship: Joseph F.<br />

Gunster’s mother is remembered through a<br />

scholarship designed to assist students from lowincome<br />

families.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Ruth Gunster Memorial Scholarship: In<br />

1971, Joseph F. Gunster ’17 established this<br />

scholarship in loving memory <strong>of</strong> his wife. <strong>The</strong><br />

scholarship, which was increased by a bequest in<br />

1980, benefits students from Northeastern<br />

Pennsylvania.
