<strong>The</strong> Marian M. and Patrick F. O’Hara<br />

Scholarship: Income from an endowment provides<br />

unrestricted scholarships to deserving<br />

young men and women.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Oppenheim Family Scholarship: This scholarship<br />

was established by the Oppenheim family,<br />

who for many years owned and operated<br />

Oppenheim’s Department Store and its predecessor,<br />

the <strong>Scranton</strong> Dry Goods Co. Income<br />

from the scholarship is used primarily for parttime,<br />

non-traditional students who need financial<br />

assistance.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rev. G. Donald Pantle, S.J., Scholarship:<br />

This scholarship, established by the <strong>Scranton</strong><br />

Jesuit Community to honor one <strong>of</strong> its own, provides<br />

financial assistance based on academic<br />

excellence and demonstrated need.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Dr. Andrew W. Plonsky Scholarship: Dr.<br />

Plonsky ’40, longtime faculty member and c<strong>of</strong>ounder<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>’s Computer Science<br />

program, passed away in 2000. His widow,<br />

Dorothy, established this memorial scholarship<br />

for Lackawanna County residents who are studying<br />

computing science.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Paul J. Poinsard, M.D., Scholarship: Mrs.<br />

JoAnne Poinsard established this scholarship in<br />

memory <strong>of</strong> her husband, a <strong>University</strong> alumnus.<br />

<strong>The</strong> scholarship assists deserving students in premedicine.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rev. George C. Powell and Msgr. John K.<br />

Powell Memorial Scholarship: <strong>The</strong> Powell family<br />

established this scholarship to provide financial<br />

assistance to deserving and needy students who<br />

also demonstrate good character and leadership<br />

qualities.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rev. Edward R. Powers, S.J., Scholarship:<br />

This scholarship provides financial assistance<br />

based on academic excellence as well as demonstrated<br />

need.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Ernest D. Preate, Sr., Memorial Scholarship:<br />

<strong>The</strong> family <strong>of</strong> Ernest D. Preate, Sr., Esq., established<br />

this scholarship in 1982. First consideration<br />

is given to needy students who are residents<br />

<strong>of</strong> Lackawanna County.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rev. J. J. Quinn, S.J., Scholarship: This<br />

scholarship honors Rev. J.J. Quinn, S.J., pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

emeritus <strong>of</strong> English. It was started by alumni<br />

and former students to honor Fr. Quinn’s many<br />

years <strong>of</strong> service to the <strong>University</strong>, his students<br />

and the community. Based on merit and need,<br />

the scholarship is available to students in all academic<br />

disciplines.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Frank X. Ratchford Memorial Scholarship:<br />

Mrs. Patricia A. Ratchford and her family established<br />

this scholarship in memory <strong>of</strong> Mr. Ratchford<br />

’61, who died in 1999. <strong>The</strong> scholarship,<br />

based equally on financial need and academic<br />

merit, is for residents <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> and Dunmore<br />

who are majoring in English, philosophy, or<br />

human resources.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Betty Redington Scholarship: This scholarship<br />

was established through a bequest from Mrs.<br />

Redington, a former trustee and a long-time<br />

friend <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> and its students. <strong>The</strong><br />

scholarship benefits students who are most in need<br />

<strong>of</strong> financial support to pursue their education.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Francis E. and Elizabeth Brennan Redington<br />

Scholarship: This scholarship was established in<br />

1984 according to provisions in the will <strong>of</strong> the<br />

late Francis E. Redington. It provides financial<br />

assistance to students on the basis <strong>of</strong> both ability<br />

and need. Some portion <strong>of</strong> the income each year<br />

supports scholarships for students from the<br />

Republic <strong>of</strong> Ireland.<br />

<strong>The</strong> John Charles and Kathryn S. Redmond<br />

Foundation Scholarship: Mr. Redmond, a<br />

prominent businessman and honorary degree<br />

recipient, established this scholarship before his<br />

death in 1989. <strong>The</strong> scholarship is given to an<br />

outstanding student who is not eligible for any<br />

direct financial aid, as specified by state or federal<br />

regulations, but who shows financial need<br />

because <strong>of</strong> the student’s family situation (e.g.,<br />

number <strong>of</strong> children in school needing parental<br />

support).<br />

<strong>The</strong> Raymond M. Reed Scholarship: This scholarship,<br />

established by Mr. and Mrs. Raymond<br />

M. Reed, is awarded to students residing in<br />

Dunmore or <strong>Scranton</strong>. Students are selected<br />

based on merit and financial need.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Dr. Richard A. Rendich Educational<br />

Scholarship: This endowed scholarship was<br />

established by the family <strong>of</strong> Grace Rendich, a<br />

<strong>University</strong> alumna. Income from the fund is<br />

used to assist in the education <strong>of</strong> needy young<br />

men aspiring to the priesthood.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Road Scholarship: James C. Barrett ’73,<br />

president <strong>of</strong> Road Scholar Transport, established<br />

this scholarship for his employees and their<br />

families.<br />

<strong>The</strong> John M. Robinson Scholarship: This scholarship<br />

was established by John M. Robinson,<br />

who attended the <strong>University</strong> and subsequently
