<strong>The</strong> Kathryn and Bernard Hyland Memorial<br />
Scholarship for Excellence in Biology: A gift<br />
from alumnus Bernard V. Hyland, M.D., made<br />
in loving memory <strong>of</strong> his parents, established an<br />
endowment in 1980 to perpetuate this annual<br />
scholarship. <strong>The</strong> scholarship is presented to a<br />
graduating senior from the biology department,<br />
who, in the opinion <strong>of</strong> the department’s faculty,<br />
has achieved distinction based on academic<br />
excellence in biology, personal integrity, and<br />
concern for others.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Lackawanna County Lawyers’ Auxiliary<br />
Scholarship: Established in 1982, this scholarship<br />
is annually presented to an outstanding<br />
graduating senior from Lackawanna County to<br />
provide scholarship assistance in the first year <strong>of</strong><br />
law school. <strong>The</strong> scholarship is given directly by<br />
the Lawyers’ Auxiliary, upon the recommendation<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> pre-law advisor.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Murray Insurance Agency, Inc., Scholarship:<br />
This scholarship is for deserving local students<br />
with first consideration to residents <strong>of</strong> the city <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Scranton</strong>.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation<br />
Scholarship: This scholarship provides aid for<br />
mature, second-career women students.<br />
<strong>The</strong> O’Malley & Harris Pre-Law Scholarship:<br />
This scholarship, sponsored by the law firm,<br />
O’Malley & Harris, P.C., is based on the outcome<br />
<strong>of</strong> an annual competition among full-time<br />
undergraduates at both <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong><br />
and Marywood <strong>University</strong>. Entry information<br />
is available from either school’s pre-law<br />
advisor.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Christopher Jason Perfilio Memorial<br />
Scholarship: Christopher Perfilio passed away<br />
the summer before his senior year. His parents<br />
and older brother established this scholarship in<br />
his honor to assist philosophy and theology/ religious<br />
studies students, as well as students in the<br />
Special Jesuit Liberal Arts program, who have<br />
records <strong>of</strong> high academic achievement and<br />
demonstrate financial need.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Bernard Shair Memorial Scholarship: This<br />
scholarship, established by family, friends, and<br />
colleagues <strong>of</strong> Dr. Shair through the <strong>Scranton</strong><br />
Area Foundation, is presented annually to a graduating<br />
senior <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> who<br />
has been enrolled in an accredited dental school.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Armond and Betty Strutin Scholarship: This<br />
scholarship, created out <strong>of</strong> the generosity and<br />
commitment to <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Armond and Betty Strutin, is distributed each<br />
Scholarships and Financial Aid 35<br />
year to deserving students identified and designated<br />
by the Purple Club.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Watterson-Gray Memorial Scholarship:<br />
Members <strong>of</strong> the Shiloh Baptist Church Family<br />
or any qualified students from the <strong>Scranton</strong> area<br />
who have demonstrated leadership are eligible to<br />
receive this scholarship. It was established in<br />
2002 by Rosemary Gray Watterson, Ed.D.<br />
Biennial Scholarship<br />
<strong>The</strong> Corcoran-Condron Scholarship: Biennially<br />
the Society <strong>of</strong> the Friendly Sons <strong>of</strong> St. Patrick <strong>of</strong><br />
Lackawanna County provides funds for a <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> student or students to enjoy<br />
the benefits <strong>of</strong> studying for one or two semesters<br />
at a university in Ireland.<br />
Endowed Chairs<br />
<strong>The</strong> Alperin Chair in Business Administration:<br />
Established by an endowment, this academic<br />
chair was set in place in 1980 through the gifts<br />
<strong>of</strong> three <strong>Scranton</strong> businessmen, Joel, Irwin and<br />
Myer Alperin, and their families. <strong>The</strong> late Joel<br />
Mitchell Alperin was the originator and the<br />
principal sponsor <strong>of</strong> the chair and its endowment.<br />
Income from the Alperin brothers’ gift is<br />
applied to the salary <strong>of</strong> a pr<strong>of</strong>essor in <strong>The</strong> Kania<br />
School <strong>of</strong> Management.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Kathryn and Bernard Hyland Chair in<br />
Biology: This endowed pr<strong>of</strong>essorship was established<br />
by Bernard V. Hyland, M.D., ’47 in<br />
honor <strong>of</strong> his parents. <strong>The</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essorship supports<br />
teaching and scholarship <strong>of</strong> a distinguished<br />
member <strong>of</strong> the biology faculty at the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Chair in Judaic Studies: Income from an<br />
endowment established by alumni and friends <strong>of</strong><br />
the <strong>University</strong> makes it possible for the <strong>University</strong><br />
to invite, for short visits to <strong>Scranton</strong>, Judaic<br />
scholars from Israel or other parts <strong>of</strong> the world,<br />
for public lectures and meetings with students<br />
and faculty.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Joseph T. and Frank M. McDonald Chair:<br />
Income from an endowment established by<br />
George and Dr. Herbert McDonald is used primarily<br />
to support the pre-law program, including<br />
support <strong>of</strong> the pre-law advisor, internship<br />
program, and advisory team. Income is also used<br />
to provide scholarship assistance to deserving<br />
students in pre-law majors.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Pius X Teaching Chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>ology: Established<br />
in 1976 by an anonymous gift and the<br />
assignment <strong>of</strong> a matching grant from the <strong>University</strong>’s<br />
