paign, this chair is occupied by a priest, or<br />

jointly by a set <strong>of</strong> priests, <strong>of</strong> the Diocese <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Scranton</strong>. <strong>The</strong> chairholders are nominated by<br />

the faculty <strong>of</strong> St. Pius X Seminary and approved<br />

by the faculty <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>ology/<br />

Religious Studies at the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Other Endowments<br />

<strong>The</strong> NEH Endowment: This endowment was<br />

established through a challenge grant from the<br />

National Endowment for the Humanities. It<br />

supports the acquisition <strong>of</strong> materials for the<br />

humanities collection in the Weinberg Memorial<br />

Library.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Jesuit Community Contribution: This gift<br />

<strong>of</strong> funds, returned to the <strong>University</strong> from payments<br />

made to Jesuits for their services, has<br />

enabled the <strong>University</strong> to <strong>of</strong>fer many scholarships<br />

from its operating budget and has substantially<br />

aided the building program.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rose I. Kelly Award: A <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong><br />

alumnus, Joseph Wineburgh, Ph.D., set in<br />

place an endowment to link the efforts <strong>of</strong> elementary<br />

and secondary school teachers to the<br />

achievements <strong>of</strong> college students. Each year, an<br />

outstanding student is selected by a committee<br />

appointed by the academic vice president. <strong>The</strong><br />

Rose I. Kelly Award winner is asked to name a<br />

high school or elementary teacher who most<br />

influenced his or her pre-college academic prepa-<br />

ration. Both the student and the teacher from<br />

pre-college days are honored at a campus ceremony.<br />

Dr. Wineburgh established the program<br />

to honor an elementary teacher, Rose I. Kelly,<br />

who greatly influenced his life.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rev. John J. Long, S.J., Fund: Contributions<br />

to this fund were made by friends <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Rev. John J. Long, S.J., president <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>,<br />

1953 to 1963, on the occasion <strong>of</strong> his<br />

Golden Jubilee in the Society <strong>of</strong> Jesus and later<br />

as a memorial after his death in 1971. <strong>The</strong> fund<br />

is invested and the income therefrom is used for<br />

projects and programs concerned with the spiritual<br />

growth <strong>of</strong> students.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Loyola Lecture: <strong>The</strong> Jesuit Community<br />

serving <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> has endowed<br />

a lecture program intended to bring distinguished<br />

Jesuit speakers to campus. Named in<br />

honor <strong>of</strong> St. Ignatius Loyola, founder <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Society <strong>of</strong> Jesus, this fund can also support visits<br />

by other scholars capable <strong>of</strong> assisting the <strong>University</strong><br />

community to a better appreciation <strong>of</strong> its<br />

Jesuit heritage.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Harry and Helen Mack Award Fund: This<br />

award was established through a unitrust by<br />

Mrs. Helen Mack and is restricted to <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong>’s Judaic Studies Program. It<br />

assists students and the community in learning<br />

about Jewish heritage and culture.
