(including all internships) as described in the<br />

catalog. Freshman-admit PT majors complete<br />

the M.P.T. degree program in five-years.<br />

Freshman-admit PT majors must enroll at<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> for all science<br />

cognate and major courses. Advanced placement<br />

(AP) credits cannot be used to satisfy<br />

the biology, chemistry, physics or PT course<br />

requirements specified in the PT curriculum.<br />

Applicants with previous college experience<br />

are admitted as transfer students. Placement<br />

in the curriculum for transfer students is evaluated<br />

individually for each applicant. Transfer<br />

students are expected to enroll as full-time<br />

students beginning with the Third Year (Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Studies). Once transfer students have<br />

begun Third Year (Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Studies), they<br />

must follow the curriculum (including all<br />

internships) as described in the catalog and<br />

complete the MPT degree program in three<br />

years. Transfer students normally enroll for all<br />

PT Department courses listed in the PT<br />

curriculum.<br />

Students continue in the PT major as long<br />

as the following criteria are maintained (students<br />

do not need to re-apply to advance to<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Studies):<br />

• Successfully complete all general education<br />

courses (as specified in the PT curriculum)<br />

as per university regulations<br />

specified in the catalog.<br />

• Achieve a letter grade <strong>of</strong> C or better in all<br />

cognate science and PT Department<br />

courses (as specified in the PT curriculum).<br />

• Achieve the following minimum cumulative<br />

grade point averages: First Year, 2.50;<br />

Second Year, 2.75; Third Year, 2.85;<br />

Fourth and Fifth Years, 3.0.<br />

• Provide documentation <strong>of</strong> 70 hours <strong>of</strong><br />

physical therapy patient contact experience<br />

before the first day <strong>of</strong> the fall term<br />

Third Year (this is in addition to the 10<br />

hours patient-related PT exposure that<br />

were required for admission to the program;<br />

students must use documentation<br />

form available from P.T. Department). All<br />

experiences must be supervised by a<br />

licensed physical therapist.<br />

• Achieve a grade <strong>of</strong> S (Satisfactory) for<br />

each clinical internship specified in the<br />

PT curriculum.<br />

* <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Mathematics Placement Procedures may overrule options (1) and (2).<br />

•Achieve a minimum grade <strong>of</strong> C on the<br />

Comprehensive Exam given Fall term <strong>of</strong><br />

the Fifth Year.<br />

• Demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>essional behavior that<br />

conforms to the APTA Code <strong>of</strong> Ethics and<br />

the physical therapy licensure requirements<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Commonwealth <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania.<br />

• Maintain current, valid CPR and first aid<br />

certification.<br />

• Provide evidence <strong>of</strong> current (at least<br />

annual) physical exam (including personal<br />

medical and health coverage information,<br />

annual TB screening, Hepatitis B<br />

verification or declination and immunization<br />

record).<br />

Students are required to complete several<br />

full-time clinical internships as specified by<br />

the PT curriculum. Internship sites are<br />

located throughout the United States, but<br />

predominantly in Pennsylvania and the surrounding<br />

states. Costs associated with travel,<br />

housing, meals, liability insurance, uniforms,<br />

etc. are the responsibility <strong>of</strong> the student.<br />

Students who do not already possess a<br />

bachelor’s degree will receive a Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />

Science in Health Sciences upon successful<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> all PT curriculum requirements<br />

at the end <strong>of</strong> the Fourth Year. This degree<br />

does not qualify students to sit for licensure<br />

examination or to practice physical therapy.<br />

Math Options for Physical <strong>The</strong>rapy<br />

Majors*<br />

1. Students with a B+ average in high<br />

school math (through trigonometry or<br />

pre-calculus) and a score <strong>of</strong> less than 590<br />

on the SAT in math will be enrolled in<br />

Math 103.<br />

2. Students with a B+ average in high<br />

school math (through pre-calculus) and<br />

a score <strong>of</strong> 590 or greater on the SAT in<br />

math will be enrolled in Math 114.<br />

3. AP credit may be awarded in Math 114<br />

on the basis <strong>of</strong> the CEEB exam; no AP<br />

credit is available for Math 103 on the<br />

basis <strong>of</strong> the CEEB exam.<br />

from a PTA program accredited by the Commission<br />

on Accreditation in Physical <strong>The</strong>rapy
