number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> people in the home, whether the mother participated in “<strong>Health</strong>y Baby”<br />

community programming, received the “<strong>Health</strong>y Baby” provincial benefit during<br />

pregnancy, and received government assistance.<br />

Implementati<strong>on</strong><br />

Women seeking prenatal care at various core area community health clinics were invited<br />

to participate. Sites serving as centers for the recruitment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> study volunteers included the<br />

Outpatient Department <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Women’s Hospital, <strong>Health</strong> Acti<strong>on</strong> Centre, and Mount Carmel<br />

Clinic. Women’s Hospital is situated at 735 NotreDame Avenue and is part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Winnipeg’s <strong>Health</strong> Sciences Centre (HSC). <strong>Health</strong> Acti<strong>on</strong> Centre, a primary health clinic<br />

in the Downtown neighbourhood <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Winnipeg, is situated at 425 Elgin Avenue and is<br />

also affiliated with HSC. Mount Carmel Clinic, another primary health clinic in the Point<br />

Douglas community <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Winnipeg, is situated at 886 Main Street. All three clinics are<br />

known to serve many members <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Aboriginal populati<strong>on</strong>. The sample for this<br />

proposed research was obtained through c<strong>on</strong>tacts made by primary care obstetricians and<br />

family physicians, prenatal nurses, clinic staff, and other health pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>essi<strong>on</strong>als providing<br />

prenatal care at these clinics.<br />

The recruitment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> research participants commenced during the summer <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2002.<br />

The first participant was recruited from <strong>Health</strong> Acti<strong>on</strong> Centre in June 2002. The first<br />

participant from the Women’s Outpatient Department (OPD) <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Health</strong> Sciences Centre<br />
