C<strong>on</strong>tributing Factors towards Early Childhood Caries<br />

The traditi<strong>on</strong>al etiological triad model for dental caries includes the susceptibility<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the host (tooth enamel), diet (fermentable sugars), and cariogenic bacteria over<br />

time. 66,67 However, it is overly simplistic to believe that these are the <strong>on</strong>ly determinants<br />

for ECC. ECC, like other complex diseases, is multifactorial in origin, including these<br />

same factors <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sugar c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong>, enamel integrity, cariogenic microorganisms and<br />

time. 68<br />

However, additi<strong>on</strong>al factors have also been associated with ECC, including<br />

socioec<strong>on</strong>omic status (SES), psychosocial issues, child rearing practices, and the social<br />

determinants <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> health. 38,69-73<br />

Significant attenti<strong>on</strong> has been devoted to investigating the relati<strong>on</strong>ship between<br />

infant feeding practices and ECC, yet some suggest that the durati<strong>on</strong> or method <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
