bombed by American cruisers dur<strong>in</strong>g the so called First Barbary War, 1801-<br />

1805, Tunisia was blockaded, and Algiers was <strong>in</strong>timidated and threatened.<br />

Greek vessels were also taken prize by the “American Navy <strong>in</strong> its first<br />

imperialistic attempts <strong>in</strong> the Mediterranean” simply because they were host<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the Turkish flag. 135<br />

Conclusion<br />

Set <strong>with</strong><strong>in</strong> a complex background of <strong>in</strong>ternational relations, The United<br />

States diplomatic approach to North Africa def<strong>in</strong>itely evolved from an early<br />

simplistic view to a more realistic one. Maneuvers for plac<strong>in</strong>g American<br />

Mediterranean trade under the protective umbrella of the European powers<br />

failed. From France to the Netherlands, the American commissioners could<br />

obta<strong>in</strong> but promises of good office from their sovereigns at a time they were<br />

seek<strong>in</strong>g similarly favorable terms as those enjoyed under the British treaties<br />

<strong>with</strong> Algiers. Brita<strong>in</strong>, reluctant to let loose of its former colonies, would not<br />

even go beyond recogniz<strong>in</strong>g their <strong>in</strong>dependence. More, mercantile <strong>in</strong>terests<br />

were strictly opposed to any extension of privileges or open<strong>in</strong>g of imperial<br />

markets to American trade. The <strong>in</strong>terest of Brita<strong>in</strong> resided <strong>in</strong> curtail<strong>in</strong>g<br />

competition from a rais<strong>in</strong>g rival; therefore, <strong>in</strong>stead of provid<strong>in</strong>g the requested<br />

protection aga<strong>in</strong>st Barbary corsairs, it recurred cunn<strong>in</strong>gly to the use of the latter<br />

as a weapon aga<strong>in</strong>st American trade. By <strong>in</strong>cit<strong>in</strong>g corsairs’ attacks aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />
