tons or thereabouts <strong>with</strong> no guns,<br />

navigated <strong>with</strong> thirteen men<br />

TO PASS <strong>with</strong> her Company,<br />

Passengers, Goods and<br />

Merchandise <strong>with</strong>out any<br />

h<strong>in</strong>drance, seizure or<br />

molestation: the said ship<br />

appear<strong>in</strong>g by good testimony to<br />

belong to one or more of the<br />

Citizens of the United States;<br />

and to him or them only.<br />

GIVEN under my Hand and the<br />

Seal of the United States of<br />

America, the 24th day of<br />

September <strong>in</strong> the year of our<br />

Note: The document is a ‘Mediterranean passport’ as dist<strong>in</strong>guished from a<br />

‘letter of marque.’ This type of passport, written <strong>in</strong> English only and <strong>with</strong> an<br />

engrav<strong>in</strong>g cut at the top so that it could be exam<strong>in</strong>ed and compared <strong>with</strong> a<br />

counterpart furnished to Alger<strong>in</strong>e warships, resulted from a requirement <strong>in</strong> the<br />

4 th article of the treaty of 5 September 1795.<br />
