Conclusion<br />

Establish<strong>in</strong>g diplomatic relations <strong>with</strong> the United States proved to be a<br />

long and thorny issue. The difficulties arose from the United States which,<br />

while transit<strong>in</strong>g to a new system of government, had to make new adjustments<br />

and from the European countries which were opposed to the conclusion of a<br />

peace treaty and attempted to prevent it. Algiers’ corsair<strong>in</strong>g diplomacy did not<br />

facilitate it either. Despite a major crisis <strong>in</strong> 1793 that resulted from the capture<br />

of more American ships, negotiations could be started and a peace treaty was<br />
