Large 1789-1845 (8 vol.), 1845-1867 series <strong>in</strong>cludes all the enactments of<br />

Congress; therefore all the treaties signed <strong>with</strong> Algiers are <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> it and<br />

they are three only. A Compilation of Messages of the Presidents (10 vol.),<br />

1896-1899 <strong>in</strong>cludes all the messages of the presidents of the USA to Congress;<br />

volumes 1 and 2 cover the researched period. Naval Documents Related to the<br />

United States Wars <strong>with</strong> the Barbary Powers (6 vol.), 1939-44, published by<br />

the Office of Naval Records, Department of the Navy, is a valuable collection<br />

because it <strong>in</strong>cludes all the reports of the naval officers who came <strong>in</strong> contact<br />

<strong>with</strong> Algiers between 1794 and 1816.<br />

In addition to the above mentioned official collection, this work<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigates unofficially published collections. These <strong>in</strong>clude a variety of<br />

material <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the writ<strong>in</strong>gs and memoirs of the American political actors as<br />

well as various collections of treaties—American and European. Primary<br />

sources also <strong>in</strong>clude autobiographies, memoirs, journals, and travel accounts<br />

whose writers had been, <strong>in</strong> one way or another, <strong>in</strong> contact <strong>with</strong> Algiers at<br />

different periods of its existence.<br />

D. CHAPTER OUTLINE<br />

Chapter I of the research work sets the religious and historical<br />

framework <strong>in</strong> which the <strong>Ottoman</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce of Algiers was created. It argues<br />

that the rise of Muslim corsair<strong>in</strong>g was an immediate consequence of Spanish<br />

Reconquista and conquest of the North African cities, itself a projection of the<br />
