Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the American Department of Treasury, as of Jan. 4, 1797, the<br />

expenses of carry<strong>in</strong>g the treaty <strong>in</strong>to effect were estimated as follows:<br />

Payments stipulated at the time of clos<strong>in</strong>g the treaty to the dey,<br />

his officers, and the treasury, for the redemption of the captives<br />

To which are to be added agreeably to Mr. Donaldson’s<br />

calculation: For percentage on the captives<br />

The expense of the frigate lately promised, agreeably to the<br />

estimate of the Secretary at War, will be<br />
