Peer educa<strong>to</strong>rs also aim <strong>to</strong> increase women’s legal protection. They are<br />

trained in legal issues that affect women <strong>and</strong> talk <strong>to</strong> communities about<br />

human rights abuses against women. The program also works in<br />

partnership with women’s organizations involved in human rights, <strong>and</strong> has<br />

a plan <strong>to</strong> find free legal aid for women in need of legal assistance.<br />

The program helps women increase their access <strong>to</strong> income by teaching<br />

<strong>HIV</strong>-positive mothers how <strong>to</strong> look after their finances <strong>and</strong> how <strong>to</strong> generate<br />

income through tailoring, farming, <strong>and</strong> making h<strong>and</strong>icrafts. The women also<br />

farm <strong>and</strong> keep small lives<strong>to</strong>ck.<br />

In addition, the program seeks <strong>to</strong> change male norms <strong>and</strong> behaviors<br />

around fatherhood <strong>and</strong> PMTCT. It partners with groups like Positive Men’s<br />

Union <strong>to</strong> train men <strong>to</strong> become men<strong>to</strong>rs who value fatherhood <strong>and</strong> are<br />

involved in PMTCT.<br />

Process<br />

Mama’s Club was started by 50 <strong>HIV</strong>-positive mothers who had attended<br />

PMTCT programs <strong>and</strong> had children younger than 3. The mothers decided<br />

<strong>to</strong> hold monthly meetings <strong>and</strong> seek training in life skills <strong>and</strong> other aspects of<br />

<strong>HIV</strong> that concerned them <strong>and</strong> their children. Since September 2003,<br />
